Teenagers who identify as goths have a three times higher risk of depression and are five times more likely to self-harm than their peers, according to new British research.
The team from Oxford University surveyed almost 3,700 teenagers who were asked to identify with a youth subculture at age 15.
Three years later, the teens were re-assessed for symptoms of depression and self-harm.
"We found that young people who identified as being a goth at 15 years of age were three times as likely to be depressed at age 18, relative to peers who didn't identify with this subculture, and they were also five times more likely to self-harm by 18 years of age," said the study's lead author Dr Lucy Bowes.
