Opera’s former CEO Jon von Tetzchner is launching the first preview of Vivaldi today, a new Chromium-based browser that is squarely aimed at power users. Vivaldi features tools like Quick Commands for using written commands instead of the mouse, an Opera-like Speed Dial for quickly accessing bookmarks, a note-taking feature and the ability to organize tabs into stacks.
“We are making a browser for our friends,” von Tetzchner told me earlier this week. “Vivaldi is for all those people who want more from their browsers.”

The team has worked on the Vivaldi browser for the last year-and-a-half, and while this is clearly still an early preview and many features are still missing, the browser feels pretty polished already. Many of Vivaldi’s features were clearly inspired by Opera, and von Tetzchner freely acknowledges that — but then Opera decided to do away with many of these after it made the switch to WebKit (and later Blink).
Made a quick screenshot of how the current build looks when a bit tweeked, such as tabs being on the left, and the panel that contains bookmarks, history and downloads on the left.
I honestly prefer browser task bars and bookmarks to be at the top.
Other than that it looks snazzy!
Maybe now I can finally manage my 400 tabs
the heck is a power user

I can definitely understand that, and by default it's like that, except for the bookmarks bar, which they still need to implement.

Someone who likes to tinker with what they're using, something current browsers don't allow without the use of third party extensions that might end up being abandoned.
Better explanation: "A power user is a personal computer user who uses advanced features of programs which are not used by the average user."
note taking in a web browser? sign me up
tab city bitch

Probably because that's what we've always been using. But think about it, how many websites actually need to be full width? There's so much empty space, so why not use it?

well, now facepunch certainly doesn't. Thanks garry.
my browser is on a 4:3 screen rather than my 16:9 for this reason. This browser would make it too thin though.
I browse on a 1080p screen so there is always so much wasted space on the sides, maybe if they implement something to take that space and use it properly it will become good, or even a new standard with the progressive increase of resolutions.
So they released Opera 27 today, most of the comments in their blog are about Vivaldi, ouch.
Is it open source?
I love the name Vivaldi after the name "Opera", it's like a sick burn
any how
looks nice, guess it has some potential

When I open Facepunch threads in new tabs I get logged out
Mouse gestures have been in since Opera 15, they're just not visible after holding in the right mouse button for awhile, unlike Opera 12 which had fancy effect to show what you were doing.
I still think the current Opera 27 is better than Chrome, but I think many will disagree with me on that one. On the plus side, you can use Chrome extensions in Opera provided you have the extension to allow it.
Was working well, but the chrome remember password thing decided to make an appearance:

Ooooh, animated favicons work.
Can I use Ad Block Plus with it? If I can't stamp out every advertisement on the internet while using a browser I refuse to use that browser on security grounds.
It seems... flat.
Opera used to be my favourite browser back in the day but I switched to Chrome to try it out (due to integration with other services and such and websites not supporting Opera) and when I finally decided I'd had enough of Chrome and wanted to go back Opera had gone stark raving mad. Hopefully this will live up to the old Opera
I like it. Seems pretty fast but the address bar thing is really annoying.

Look into using a custom Hosts file. The problem with ad blocking with extensions is that your computer still makes contact with the ad servers, the ad blocker merely blocks you from seeing the ads. The hosts file can be used to keep the ad servers(or anyone else you choose) from contacting your computer at all. A hosts file can be edited by a text editor, so you can customize it to your needs.

I have. Can't find a list of ad servers comprehensive enough to do what ABP does, also that doesn't let me block certain things on the fly that may not be ads but I don't want to see anyway. Stuff like reaction images that get posted frequently or something like that.
The overall layout isn't bad, but I'm going to let it go for at least a year or two, see how it picks up and what changes and improvements they implement.
Also, I can't stand "Speed Dial" systems on any browser.
Hopefully it will be good.
The new Opera (chromium based) is 100% shite and so far from what it used to be it's sad.
Why they removed mouse gestures and don't let you use your number keys to open speed dial tabs.. it's beyond me.
I never liked mouse gestures and don't have a number pad, but, why the HELL, of all things, would they remove that?

This is the one I use, http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm it doesn't block everything but it does have over 15000.
it's another chrome.... i want presto ;_;

Well then you use a custom hosts file in combination with your ad blocker. It's not either/or. The main thing is to snip as many ad serves as you can at the front gate, before your computer 'sees' them.
Is it any faster than Chrome?
Well this is a bit disappointing isn't it
I mean it's another alternative but it IS just Chrome

Not quite, most ad blocking extensions (µBlock, AdBlock Plus, etc) for Firefox/Chrome will block the network request itself.
That said, the hosts file is still a good approach if you want to block ads in other applications.
