My first pedal was a Danelectro FAB distortion. About $15. Surprisingly good sound.
Try boss or electro harmonix, you can get good cheap ones, the people here who say you can't are just having too-high standards, it's not about the price it's the sound you can get out of it.

I got the big muff pi recently, sounds great :)
I've seen Boss OD/dist pedals for under 50 before.
Probably not the best, butif you're strapped for cash, then it's either that or nothing, sadly.
though in the future, you can have something to mess around with and maybe mod into something beautiful.

I'm liking my Muff, too. I get drowned out in the mix when I'm on bass playing with other people, but I think I can do a mod to fix that. Remove some diodes or something
