• The Internet VS SOPA: Round 2

So I got this little email today and I thought of sharing it with you.
Last week there was a small meeting at Mozilla to discuss SOPA, the Internet Censorship Bill. It was eerie. The DC groups were practically screaming "this bill is the worst we've ever seen, and we can't stop it" -- while everyone else had barely heard of it. The consensus? We needed to wake people up. Well, this week the Internet woke up. *You* woke the Internet up. SOPA was a trending tweet in the U.S. and between the Electronic Fronteir Foundation, Avaaz, and Demand Progress (groups that are just now working together!) we sent Congress over 1,000,000 emails. The scary part? We still might lose. Though growing fast, our coalition still isn't strong enough. The bill is backed by an unholy alliance of Hollywood, its unions, drug companies, and the Chamber of Commerce. They are pouring money into it, and they've been working on this for years. Yesterday, big players like Tumblr, Mozilla, Reddit, BoingBoing and even 4chan came out strong on our side. Now it's your turn. We've got to dig in and go viral. Can you tell 20 friends about the Internet Censorship Bill? And remember, the thing that made yesterday so powerful were the thousands of people who ran "Stop Censorship" messages on their sites. Click here for the code. If you ran "Stop Censorship" or the "Contact Congress" splash on your page, we humbly ask you to keep running it until this bill is dead, and to find more people who can. We understand if you can't, but the bill is just as bad as it was yesterday -- so we've got to ask. Click here to get the code to add to your page. It's easy. It's easy. This week was amazing -- thanks for everything you've done. There will be more, we promise. Holmes Wilson Fight for the Future AmericanCensorship.org
TL;DR - We "held off" for round 1, but SOPA still has a chance of winning. Doesn't mean we should despair. I seriously think we should share this kind of info with everyone and I mean everyone who don't want to lose the internet. Share, help, discuss, etc.
Can you link to the code so everyone here can post it?
Can you link to the code so everyone here can post it?
Sure, hold on I'm gonna try and put it in the OP. Edit: Done!
Sure, hold on I'm gonna try and put it in the OP.
Alright dude, it's ridiculous that this bill has a chance, corporate lobbying is a gigantic evil that must be destroyed, but such is impossible.
Non-American link doesn't work for me! D:
I honestly don't believe we can permanently get rid of it. Even if it's repealed, they'll just crawl back to their dark corners and continue plotting how to do it again.
I honestly don't believe we can permanently get rid of it. Even if it's repealed, they'll just crawl back to their dark corners and continue plotting how to do it again.
We can atleast try, and try to fight for our privacy to keep it so
Is there anything I can do in Canada to try to help stop this? I know if this passes in America it will come to Canada pretty quick because Harper is a fucking tool who blindly follows whatever America does.
I honestly don't believe we can permanently get rid of it. Even if it's repealed, they'll just crawl back to their dark corners and continue plotting how to do it again.
It's all about delaying the end, not preventing it, since that most likely isn't possible.

Tell me people, this shit can't go through.
I, too, want to know what I can do. Tell me people, this shit can't go through.
I think there was some survey where you can write your name and email down, even if you're not from America.
Jesus christ, when are these people going to give this shit up. SOPA invades privacy, unconstitutional, blah blah just get a new congress, america.
I don't want the Internet to die...
The dumb thing is, is that the whole SOPA act is a goddamn DNS ban, you can change to google's DNS or OpenDNS and access all the website that were banned.
The dumb thing is, is that the whole SOPA act is a goddamn DNS ban, you can change to google's DNS or OpenDNS and access all the website that were banned.
Wouldn't they both have to block anything requested, due to being US companies.
I doubt everyone who uses the internet even knows what a DNS is. I mean people like my Mom, possibly my Dad, my sister and her husband, my friends, and their friends, etc.
Wouldn't they both have to block anything requested, due to being US companies.
Actually, what would happen if Google, Facebook and the others just said "Fuck it" and moved everything to Europe?
Actually, what would happen if Google, Facebook and the others just said "Fuck it" and moved everything to Europe?
I for one would spend a few hours giggling madly.
Forgive my ignorance, but does this SOPA bill effect non-Americans at all? I really don't know much about it, but surely companies could just do what they do for China and modify their websites and such for USA?
Forgive my ignorance, but does this SOPA bill effect non-Americans at all? I really don't know much about it, but surely companies could just do what they do for China and modify their websites and such for USA?
Inasmuch as I recall, it would allow US companies to deal with non-US infringement of the bill, thus making it easier for them to attack places like The Pirate Bay (wherein the government does not give a fuck). So, in essence, yes it does. I find the number of email's sent to Congress to be quite staggering; their servers must have been having quite some difficulty.
Who THE FUCK would want to ban the single most innovative piece of technology in history, apart from the wheel, and the spoon. WHY.
Jesus christ, when are these people going to give this shit up. SOPA invades privacy, unconstitutional, blah blah just get a new congress, america.
You make it seem like we can just walk in there and tell the guys to fuck off
Who THE FUCK would want to ban the single most innovative piece of technology in history, apart from the wheel, and the spoon. WHY.
Greedy people.
Greedy people.
What will they get out of it?
Who THE FUCK would want to ban the single most innovative piece of technology in history, apart from the wheel, and the spoon. WHY.
See with corporatism the strategy is "If I can make money doing it, I don't care how many people it hurts". Capitalism is good without corporatism, but it's extremely rare.
What will they get out of it?
According to them, more sales.
See with corporatism the strategy is "If I can make money doing it, I don't care how many people it hurts".
Well, shit. I hope the Internet wins.
I wonder if it'd be possible to get the two major internet players, Google and Facebook, against this, too. Considering this would cut into their profit margins pretty deep.
Who THE FUCK would want to ban the single most innovative piece of technology in history, apart from the wheel, and the spoon. WHY.
Technophobes and and greedy corporate executives.
Here's a question I have for many of you: If this damned thing actually passes, do you think that the number of people in the 'Occupy' movement will grow?
