• 2016 Golden Tomato Winners Announced: Find Out the Best Reviewed Movies and TV Shows of the Year
The reason we’re here now is that the 2016 Golden Tomato winners, the round-up of the best-reviewed movies and television shows of last year, have been revealed. In order to qualify for this honor, a movie must have at least 40 reviews and must have been released in theaters in 2016. A TV show must have at least 20 reviews, including at least five reviews from “top critics.” The tricky thing about reading (and enjoying) Rotten Tomatoes is to understand that there isn’t a unique way to register a mixed review. That means that a film that is widely liked will always score higher than a film that a smaller group is wildly passionate about. In a weird way, these winners are more about the least-disliked movies of 2016 rather than the most liked. Disney’s animated film Zootopia led the awards as the best-reviewed wide release of 2016, with Taika Waititi’s Hunt For the Wilderpeople being named the best-reviewed limited release film. In the television section, Atlanta won the distinction of being the best-reviewed new show while Transparent season 3 was the best-reviewed returning show. Other films were awarded in subcategories, with Captain America: Civil War being named the best-reviewed comic book movie, Moonlight the best-reviewed drama, and Arrival the best-reviewed science fiction/fantasy film (all of which made our site-wide top 15 0f 2016). Television winners also included Supergirl, The Americans, and O.J.: Made in America. Here’s the complete list of winners: Best-Reviewed Movies Wide Release – “Zootopia” (98%) Limited Release – “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (97%) Best Movie UK – “Eye in the Sky” (95%) Best Movie AU – “Hacksaw Ridge” (86%) Best-Reviewed Movies by Genre Action — “Hacksaw Ridge” (86%) Animation — “Zootopia” (98%) Comedy — “Love & Friendship” (98%) Comic Book/Graphic Novel — “Captain America: Civil War” (90%) Documentary — “Weiner” (97%) Drama — “Moonlight” (98%) Foreign Language — “Things to Come (L’avenir)” (100%) Horror — “The Witch” (91%) Kids/Family (live action) — “The Jungle Book” (94%) Musical/Music Film — “La La Land” (92%) Romance — “Southside with You” (91%) Sci-Fi/Fantasy — “Arrival” (94%) Thriller — “Hell or High Water” (98%) Best-Reviewed TV Shows New Show — “Atlanta” (100%) Returning Show — “Transparent”: Season 3 (100%) Best-Review TV Shows by Genre TV Drama — “The Americans”: Season 4 (99%) TV Comedy — “Atlanta” (100%) TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror — “Supergirl”: Season 2 (100%) TV Movie/Miniseries — “Roots” (97%) Documentary Series — “O.J.: Made in America” (100%)
Source: /FILM & Rotten Tomatoes
Slightly disappointed to not see Westworld in there. Definitely deserved at least a mention.
Supergirl is considered horror?
Supergirl is considered horror?
Have you seen the actress? Seriously, it's pretty weird that they decided that Supergirl is considered horror.

Though it's weird that they put all of those under one banner. Maybe because there isn't that much horror on TV.
The Americans was incredible, definitely deserved the best TV drama.
No Ghostbusters?! But it was a certified fresh film!
Supergirl is considered horror?
Scifi/fantasy/horror is all lumped together for TV since it's not really a common or popular genre. If they weren't lumped together, then scyfy channel shows with 25% ratings would be taking the award for the science fiction genre.
If you haven't seen Arrival, go watch it. Its a wonderful thought provoking Sci Fi. Especially if you loved Contact.
I cannot believe Supergirl was rated above a 10%.
Eye In The Sky is a really good film, glad to see it up there. Its an interesting discussion piece on war and its consequences and I would recommend it to those who want to have something to talk about afterwards.
I cannot believe Supergirl was rated above a 10%.
Well it's a good example of what fanboy-ism does to media. We'll be seeing a lot of money being spent on super-hero garbage for a long time now that its proven to make billions. Marvel has made over 10 billion so far with 2.5 billion invested in these super hero movies. This doesn't include toys, DVD sales, T-shirts, ect.
Not surprised about the Zootopia ratings, easily one of the best modern disney films

That's not true at all. Scifi/fantasy/horror dominates the TV market. Scifi: Black Mirror: Season 3 (93%) Fantasy: Game of Thrones: Season 6 (96%) Horror: Stranger Things: Season 1 (95%)

Worth noting that Supergirl doesn't even pass their own rules criteria, but gets the number 1 spot for some reason:
A TV show must have at least 20 reviews, including at least five reviews from “top critics.”
It's their awards, so they can do what they want. Pretty silly though.
Sure makes them look untrustworthy though. Kinda looks like someone paid them to do this.
No Ghostbusters?! But it was a certified fresh film!
what as up with that anyway? [editline]17th January 2017[/editline] RT is usually pretty decent

Prior to the evolution of netflix, there wasnt a whole lot out there that was actually good.
Supergirl has some of the worst production values and editing even in comparison to the CW shows. Who even watches those shows? Everything I have heard about them has been a universal mess, even the one that is considered tolerable. I mean holy crap, in arrow they killed off a major DC character just so she would not get in the way of a Mary Sue character that the fan base absolutely hates
Those are all Netflix shows or non-cable tv shows. Perhaps there wasn't much fantasy, but good Horror anthologies have always existed, if you knew where to look. And Scifi was in large part DEVELOPED on TV. Heard of Star Trek?

Something to note, A certain website notorious for hosting peer-to-peer content now has a lot of these titles in the top of their listing.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a great film, glad its up there.
RT is a pretty bad review source for TV compared to their movie section. Supergirl Season 1 had a lot of reviews from writers that were praising it for a strong female role, I doubt they even watched the show that much.
