Mike Capuano (D-MA) and Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) introduced the “We Are Watching You Act” last week in order to protect the privacy of consumers from DVR boxes (or similar devices) that include built-in cameras and microphones. Verizon, who provides the popular FiOS service, filed a patent application for a DVR with video and audio monitoring capabilities in 2012. But, at this point, it’s unknown if they have such a DVR in development. So for now, the “We Are Watching You Act” is strictly an anti-Xbox One bill as the system’s Kinect sensor is the only device that meets the qualifications of the bill.

If you do chose to opt-in, when the device is recording it will display “WE ARE WATCHING YOU” in a font “large enough to be readable from a distance.”
This is just golden. I wonder what Microsoft will say in reply.
It won't pass microsoft has too much money. It's stupid anyways as you can turn all of the features of kinect off, its just uneducated congressman throwing shit around like usual.
Not quite RIP Xbox One but more hopefully "RIP Kinect always-on/plugged in so it's an enjoyable experience".
It's not like anybodys going to buy the Xone lol

When you walk out your front door, you lose all right to privacy. The Xbox One invades the privacy within your own home. That's why people have a problem with it.
You can choose not to buy an Xbox One, you can't choose to have other people not buy Google Glass.
Is someone seeing you in public infringing upon your privacy?
It won't pass microsoft has too much money. It's stupid anyways as you can turn all of the features of kinect off, its just uneducated congressman throwing shit around like usual.
It's always on in SOME state considering it's designed to listen for "Xbox On".
When the recording device is in use, the words WE ARE WATCHING YOU would appear, large enough to be readable from a distance, for as long as the device is recording the viewing area.
uhhhh, why the fuck should this happen if you've opted in
You can choose not to buy an Xbox One, you can't choose to have other people not buy Google Glass.
Taking pictures of people in public isn't illegal though. Like what the paparazzi do.
Is someone seeing you in public infringing upon your privacy?
No, I think he means that people walking around with the Google Glass - a device that is always connected AFAIK - means that any kind of app on it could be used to record what they see, including you, possible infringing privacy.
No, I think he means that people walking around with the Google Glass - a device that is always connected AFAIK - means that any kind of app on it could be used to record what they see, including you, possible infringing privacy.
So someone seeing you can infringe upon your privacy, because it records you? Sorry but recording has nothing to do with it, wear a jacket with a fel UV or IR leds on it if you don't want people recording you. Should police be called on for infringing of privacy with their dash cams? Should stores no longer be allowed to have cameras on their roofs to record the parking lots for stolen goods because they can see beyond them? Should news crews have to get permission from every person in the background of one of their broadcasts and if a person walking around the corner complains they can be sued if it was a live broadcast?
You can choose not to buy an Xbox One, you can't choose to have other people not buy Google Glass.
Which is why I'm not buying Xbox One but when I go into a home with it, I have absolutely no privacy regardless of whether it's on or off. Google Glass is off until you turn it on. Targeting Google Glass is fucking retarded. People out in public are recorded every day, like it or not and a camera on someone's face is not any different than someone using a camera phone. What people should be concerned about is those "spycam glasses" that you wouldn't think twice about. Oh and get rid of cameras, camcorders, smartphones, the whole slew of them as well because they can all do just about the same thing as Google Glass can. In public it shouldn't be such a big deal. Unless anyone can supply a bigger reason (feel free to) I'm sticking with that.
imo it should just be required that for you to be filmed in public there needs to be some sort of visual notification that is visible to everyone else not using the filming device. ie when google glass is recording or taking a snapshot there should be a tiny red LED lit up just so everyone is aware. i feel like thats a completely fair requirement
Good. Who the fuck wants a camera and microphone that is always turned on and sending data?

On one hand, people will be able to record abuse of authority, harassment and assault but people will also be able to record you without your knowledge. I just believe it is quite egotistical to think anyone gives enough of a fuck about you to sit and record you.
Taking pictures of people in public isn't illegal though. Like what the paparazzi do. Who the fuck wants a camera and microphone that is always turned on and sending data?
I wouldn't mind a microphone that's essentially always on and is listening for cues when I want the device to do something. That said as far as transmitting data goes, the only use of the data I''m okay with is one that essentially helps create a voice profile to make it easier to recognise the commands I give it and to build a soundscape profile to once again be able to tell my voice and the commands from ambient noise apart. The feature overall seems handy and useful imho.
Good. Who the fuck wants a camera and microphone that is always turned on and sending data?
*insert every smartphone ever made here*
*insert every smartphone ever made here*
Yeah but with phones and credit cards you can just slip a signal blocker over top. I doubt there are going to be Xbox-one cozies.
cool. maybe afterward they can get a bill out that stops the monitoring our of phones calls and email
Except that google glass doesn't magically stop working if you enter non-public spaces.
And those with authority of said non-public spaces can ask you to remove it. At the expense of maybe some people throwing a fit, but if it makes people uncomfortable in a non-public space, or there is sensitive information being exchanged, then they should remove/turn it off.
yeah but i think voyeurism is one of the main concerns for most people regarding google glass. awkward nerds from reddit get away with snapping cell phone pics of girls asses in public and then sharing them with other mongoloids online so i can understand peoples apprehension of having a bunch of nerds wearing google glass just having to glance in their direction and tap their temple to get a shot.
When it's explained like that, I understand the concern but as you said, it's done with a phone. I just always hear "the google botnet is out to get you" kind of thing. Either way, if Google does implement a recording/picture indicator, it'll be disabled over at XDA-Developers within 24 hours.
Is someone seeing you in public infringing upon your privacy?
Everyone seems to think that I want some kind of legislation against Google Glass or something I think that taking pictures of people in public without their permission, with them being the subject of the photo and not just someone who happens to be there, is immoral but I understand the issues that would arise if you made it illegal.
uhhhh, why the fuck should this happen if you've opted in
They are likely to extremely downplay the fact that the camera is always recording you. ToS shouldn't be able to sell your rights to privacy down the river without making it exceedingly apparent that you are doing so, especially when it's doing so in such a creepy and awkwardly persistent manner.
