United States to send 300 troops to Cameroon to help fight Boko Haram
Barack Obama on Wednesday notified US Congress that he intends to deploy 300 troops to Cameroon to conduct intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
In a letter released by the White House, the president said 90 personnel had already been deployed, and would be armed for self-defense.
A senior administration official told AFP the deployment was “part of the counter Boko Haram effort”.
Cameroon, along with a growing number of west and central African nations, has been targeted by the Islamist militants, who are expanding operations beyond the group’s traditional base in northern Nigeria.
Being as Cameroon is part of the British commonwealth why isn't the UK sending in troops ??
I'm okay with this actually, assuming Cameroon is okay with it.
yeah i guess, but the british have left afghanistan so could still deploy some
Why always the US? Is there literally no other nation that can help?
There's literally no downside to assisting with intelligence operations against terror groups. We're not sending 300 grunts to shoot up the place. It's 300 Intel guys that will probably never leave base.

That is, unless they mean Force Recon type guys.

Probably because they haven't asked, also just because a country is in the commonwealth doesn't mean we have to help. Members of the commonwealth have no obligation to help each other, since they're only united by language, history or culture; and because of their similar views on human rights, law and democracy.

As GoDong-DK points out, France has helped their ex colonies. I think the UK can step it up a bit. Don't be like the rest of Europe and make the US military your security blanket.

Boko Haram is active in Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger. All four countries with the inclusion of Benin have dedicated 8700 troops to a multinational force and the UK, France and the US are all involved in training and support roles. France even has a 3000 man force headquartered in Chad tasked with counter-terrorism in the region. The UK has been training the Nigerian forces in addition to providing military surveillance for over a year and France is involved in training the forces of Chad and Niger.
The US is by no means the only country holding this effort aloft. Get off your high horse.

Idk. Ask your democratically elected government.

So you want this group to continue selling girls into slavery?
This is a crisis that the UN should be used for but Nigeria hasn't called for that help they wanted the US

No, but I'd wish America would just adopt the title of world police already and quit beating around the bush.
