Whoever came up with the idea to roll out on that device didn't think it through well enough.
I can't see them going through court and win with this.
The whole fucking reason programs are plastered with ads is so they can have the revenue to show them in the first place.
How is that possible? Wouldn't that fuck up the entire timeline on your TV?

I think it's a recording device that skips ads when recording.
A legal row has erupted in the US over a set-top box that lets viewers skip over adverts in recorded TV shows.
Yep.
"We must NOT give the PEASANT consumers the option to skip our 15 minute ad blocks being shoved down their throats. If we do, we won't be able to afford to lobby our new 30 minute ad-blocks anymore!"
It's not like people wouldn't skip those anyway, only now they don't have to do it manually. I really don't see the problem with this.

If it skips commercials in a show that you've recorded, I don't really see a problem with it. I thought it had the ability to skip the commercials live or something like that.

They should make the ability to skip commercials live and add some other good program in the meantime.
All i see on this deal is money-grubbing massive corporations that think the public is their plaything. We're all getting fucked over by all of the large corporations. I know i sound like a paranoid asshole, but it's obvious, there's no way that it would cost Cellphone companies $150 per user to run a couple hundred towers. Same for internet providers.
What's the point of doing that? DVRS allow you to fastforward and skip the ads. Some companies are already circumventing that by putting ads for shows in the same network, and putting the TV rating box in. The rating box is used by many people to see when the show is back on, so this trips people up and have them watch an ad anyway.
Unless they make something that allows you to skip commercials on LIVE television, they shouldn't worry.
I saw an ad for Hopper DVR on TV today. That's a little ironic.

Thats not being a paranoid asshole.
Thats being realistic. Of course the corporations fuck us over.
This is really stupid because we all know people just fast forward the ads when watching recordings, they're not losing anything.
This lawsuit is fundamentally retarded. Virgin have been offering this in the UK for some time now, and none of our broadcasters give a shit.
If they were smart they'd make it so DVR's still record their commercials, instead of saying its a crime to skip an advertisement.

Fast-forward to the half-time show in the Super Bowl.

This is the same as claiming that everyone uses adblock and that no one is tricked by spam mail.
That's not how it works and is simply not the case.
This is the main, and almost only, source of revenue for the channels. You can skip by them using fast forward, so do that. Removing them means nobody will BE ABLE to see them which is completely different from "not everyone watches them".

Everyone wouldn't buy this box anyway, most people don't even care about ads.
I think this should still be legal, just make it automatically skip the ads when playing back but still record them.
