Hopefully this is the right section. I read the wiki articles but it didn't really help me understand the difference. I'm more of a software guy, not hardware. The Dell mini has the option for:
160GB, 2.5inch, 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive [Included in Price] OR
16GB Solid State Drive [add $60]
What am I paying for if i get the 16 gig solid state? I'm mainly using the mini for web, irc, usenet, some torrenting and small file storage. In your opinion, what one should I get?

I am assuming it's either one or the other? Correct? If so I would go for the 160GB 5400RPM, sure the solid state is going to be blazing fast but really you're going to end up disappointed with the capacity. 16GB can fill pretty quick but it really depends on how you're using it.

Small as hell and not worth it unless it's a SAN or NAS device

The SSD is definitely not worth it. It's fast, but you can get memory sticks with more space than that drive. Plus your OS will fill at least half of it unless you go linux.

All of it if he uses Vista
the SSD won't be blazing fast, Netbook SSDs are generally very slow. If you are worried about your harddrive dying from rough usage then get the SSD, otherwise get the Harddrive
