Specs: CPU: Intel I5 3570 GPU: XFX Radeon HD 7970 Black Edition Twin Cooler RAM: 2x4 GB DDR3 1600 mHz Kingston HyperX Blu Bundkort: MSI B75A-G43 SSD: Intel 330 120 GB HDD: Seagate Barracude 7200.12 1 TB PSU: OCZ ZT-550W Not decided on case yet
Get the 3570k, get the intel 520 series, and perhaps get a different psu, I haven't had good experiences with ocz.
Get the 3570k
Unless he wants to overclock the processor, I don't see the point of getting the K version.
Unless he wants to overclock the processor, I don't see the point of getting the K version.
Bad argument, for $15 more, he can get a severe boost in performance if desired.

Also overclocking the CPu would do (almost) nothing to framerates since the GPU is more the one who bottleneck at higher resolutions.

He doesn't need to overclock right away. Lets say he buys the 3570k, and uses the stock cooler and doesn't overclock. Great, everything is running just peachy. Now maybe next year or the year after, some game demands more cpu power, well there you go, you can just buy a cheap hyper 212, and overclock it. He doesn't have to, but imo, it would be foolish to not buy the 3570k over the 3570.
-My apologies, I derped -
and perhaps get a different psu, I haven't had good experiences with ocz.
The ZT series is actually very good. OCZ doesn't make too many bad PSUs anymore. [editline]10th September 2012[/editline]
A single "cheap hyper 212" isn't going to be enough if OP will ever overclock in a near future.
The Hyper 212 and it's other variants are the best budget coolers and many people can hit 4.5ghz no problem on them. More often than not they get great temps but can't overclock anymore because of limitations on the chip itself.

So spend some more on the CPU, and get another PSU is the message ? Any suggestions on the PSU specifically ?
My i5 2500k pushes 4.4GHz with a single 212 fan and max temps at 70c which is great for me seeing as I have shit airflow [editline]11th September 2012[/editline] So its very possible, and imo the performance difference is big.
I wouldn't go with XFX on the GPU. Saphire is good. OCZ are a bit eeh on their PSUs, try an XFX PSU. They are based on seasonic supplies.
What's wrong with xfx gpu? I've bought a bunch and work good.
XFX no shiny stickers
What's wrong with xfx gpu? I've bought a bunch and work good.
Lately they have been quite unreliable with their GPUs.
Pepper;37673798']Lately they have been quite unreliable with their GPUs.
I agree, i had an XFX 8800GT and after a year it stopped working altogether, the store gave me in return an HD 4850 which has for the past 3 and half years not had one problem
I already bought the XFX GPU, are their PSUs worth anything ?
I already bought the XFX GPU, are their PSUs worth anything ?
they're great
Pepper;37673798']Lately they have been quite unreliable with their GPUs.
I had xfx 5850s un cf for about two years, loved em.
Also my current computer is really shit so I wanted to know if I can get >60 fps in source games with this build [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] And which meassures do I look for when I buy the case, because once I upgraded my GFX in my old computer I had to saw trough metal HDD holders(sockets whatever) to make room for its fat ass I'd like to not have to do that on my next case.
People around here typically recommend he coolermaster HAF line. Haven't used them myself, but they are quite large.

I was playing source games on ultra at 130 FPS on a 9800 & 9500 GT. Also any modern case now will fit full length cards. A HAF 912 for example is a mid tower but it can accommodate the largest cards out there.
Could it max ot Red orchestra 2 too in 1920*1080? Also case is gonna take a while, turns out most modern cases are hideous and the ones with acceptable designs look cheap and screams plastic. It's very depressing looking for an aesthitcally pleasing case, because I can imagine I'm not the only one who sooner or later stumbled across those japanese Windys cases from Japan around 2009, too magnificent, too out of stock, too expensive to get ahold of. [editline]22nd September 2012[/editline] Magnificent http://www.edbpriser.dk/kabinet/silverstone-temjin-tj09b-w-id-406396.aspx Closest affordable match I could find :(
That looks like it would have god awful airflow.
That looks like it would have god awful airflow.
the metal chasis below the two fans houses two fans and the blind side of the chassis has an intake
Its still does nto look like a lot of surface area for fans. It's hard to tell but I can't see anything in the front. High RPM fans can substitute, but they are loud. The coolermaster HAFs have something like 4 140-200nm fans. If they had more they'd probably need to be bolted down to keep them from taking off. It's more than that though. Maybe the picture is deceptive, but it looks somewhat cramped. I like the cases that I've used specifically becaues they've been fat. I don't have to worry about constrained points for airflow. Then again I'm not an aesthetics person. As long as my case functions, is quiet, and isn't a particularly nasty shade of putrid green or bubblegum pink I probably won't care.
Call me an idiot but CoolerMasters are ugly and I'm not willing to place one in my apartment. Also better view: Slightly different model though
Have you looked at something from, uh, Corsair or NZXT? Tell me if their cases are crap in your opinion. It's not all about the looks, after all.
NZXT seems to be afraid of square like shapes Corsair Obsidian Series 650D is actually quite awesome, affordable and not made of plastic
That's seriously cramped as fuck. No way you could have reasonable temperatures with an OCed processor and a graphics brick, assuming you could even fit a large GPU in there. Cable management would be an absolute nightmare with no area behind the motherboard and hard drives in places like that, and that just further contributes to poor airflow. I also hate hinges. Just something else that breaks. They also make it functionally impossible to reach back, pop out a panel, and do something like add in a hard drive if you put your case in a slot on a desk. Not that my current desk requires that, but I've used desks that do, and it's a colossal pain in the ass to unpin the rats nest of cables, move the case out, and then put it back in.
