Stanley Kubrick is an American film director, born on July 26th 1928, died March 7th 1999. He is famous for his attention to detail, reclusive manner, a wide span of genres and general expertise of film making.
Most of his movies are novel adaptations. After several commissioned works in the 1950s, a few of which Kubrick was displeased with and withdrew from circulation, he began making much bigger budget movies, beginning in 1960 with
Spartacus

Hot on the heels of Ben-Hur's popularity, Spartacus was a big budget epic starring Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis, characterised by its large cast and highly detailed battle sequences. It set the mould for many future epics, especially Gladiator.
Lolita

Based on the excellent novel by Vladimir Nabokov. Everyone wondered how a movie could be made, as the book details the sexual relationship between pervert Humbert Humbert (James Mason) and his 12 year old step daughter, Dolores Haze. Despite its paedophilic context being indicative of controversy, the movie was a success, and was remade by Adrian Lyne in 1990.
Dr. Strangelove

An excellent, biting Cold War satire movie - often regarded as the finest satire ever made. A very dark comedy.
2001: A Space Odyssey

The first 'serious' science fiction movie. Based on the novel by Arthur C. Clarke, this movie introduced several Kubrick themes, particularly expert camera work, long takes and the dramatic use of classical music. A masterpiece of science fiction, with a famously perplexing denouement.
A Clockwork Orange

Famously banned for depicting teenage rape and gratuitous violence (though fairly tame by today's standards) A Clockwork Orange has since gained cult status and a devoted teenage following. Continuing Kubrick's theme of classical music, which is a core plot element of this movie, he pairs it with artistic sets, such as the milk bar

Barry Lyndon

Barry Lyndon is a costume drama-cum-epic, made in 1975, being one of only two movies that Kubrick made in the 70s. It showcases a high degree of detail to everything, from costumes to cinematography, and is Steven Spielberg's favourite Kubrick movie.
The Shining

The Shining is often seen as the scariest movie of all time, but this is not because it contains a scary vampire or shambling zombies, but because of its expert use of steadicam, particularly in long corridors. terrifying phantasmagoric set pieces and feeling of claustrophobia.

Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket was the final film Kubrick made in the 1980s, and is widely regarded as one of the finest war movies ever made. It was unique in that it depicted the Vietnam war in ruddy urban scapes as opposed to dense jungles as in Apocalypse Now and others. The movie is most famous for its oppressive, shouting drill sergeant.

Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick's final film is a Freudian Odyssey of epic proportions and in my opinion his finest work. It is a dreamy, surreal sexual thriller and is brilliant in every way. It was not liked by moviegoers on release, and its production was shrouded in secrecy. It exhibits many of Kubrick's signatures - an intense atmosphere, expert use of music, and spacious, artistic locations. It is most famous for its bizarre depiction of a secret society engaging in a hierogamic orgy. I have dreams about this movie all the time. This movie is damn scary.

It also has a lot of Nicole Kidman's arse.

Which is pretty cool.
Discuss your favourite Kubrick works here!
I've seen A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Odessey, Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining. They're all great, except for Clockwork Orange, which is just really odd :v:
Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining are definitely my two favorites, I'm obviously leaving Clockwork out.
I didn't actually like A Clockwork Orange as much as I hoped. All my friends raved about it, then we put it on at a party one day and there was all this rape and violence, and my friends had been banging on about it as if they were glorifying it.
It wasn't until I watched the whole thing that I understood what they meant!
my favorite of his (and most likely my favorite movie of all time) is a clockwork orange. i've seen all of his films with the exception of eyes wide shut
also, why isn't paths of glory up there before spartacus?

I just watch this and it was great.
MEIN FUHRER, I CAN WALK!
I love Stanley Kubrick but I hated Dr. Strangelove
I had to stop watching it over half way through it was just so bad. I do not understand what anybody likes about it.
I've only watched FMJ, clockwork orange, the shining and spartacus and loved them all. Thanks for the list, I'll check some others out.
The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and Dr. Strangelove are my favourites. I have Barry Lyndon lying around but have not gotten around to watching it.
Top 4 Kubrick Films (4 because I have only seen 4 :saddowns:)
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. The Shining
2. Doctor Stranglove
1. A Clockwork Orange
Out of all of those I've only seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've lost count of the amount of times I've watched it. In fact, I might just watch it now :buddy:
Seen all of those, Stanley is my favorite director
Apparently Rob Zombie quite likes Clockwork Orange, because he based one of this music videos on it:

I've only seen Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove (I love both of them!), but I want to see A Space Odyssey and Clockwork Orange at some point.

Well it's really funny to start with. I liked it a lot more than Full Metal Jacket.

Best, and last, line of the movie.

Clockwork is pretty messed up.
Stanley Kubrick, we'll miss you.
I've only seen 2001 and FMJ.
FMJ was brilliant but 2001 is so fucking long, maybe because It's trying to show me how boring being in space would really be..
[editline]11:30PM[/editline]
I think I'll go watch it right now.
2001 was great and all, but it should stay a book.
Stanley Kubrick is the greatest director of all time, no doubt about it.
1. A Clockwork Orange
2. Dr. Strangelove
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey
4. Full Metal Jacket
5. The Shining
6. Barry Lyndon
7. Paths of Glory
8. Eyes Wide Shut
I still need to see Lolita, The Killing, and Spartacus.
My favorite Kubrick film is without a doubt 2001: A Space Odyssey. Everything about this film is great.
A Clockwork Orange is one of the best I have seen, despite it's weirdness. Full Metal Jacket is also great.
Dr.Strangelove is the best of all his movies.
He was a brilliant man.
2001 was great and all, but it should stay a book.
It was fucking meant to be a movie, damnit. The movie and the book were made at the same time collaboratively by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.
They're two sides of the same story, one being all literary and wordsy and the other being all visual and auditory. A'course, the youngin's today don't know that, with their Michael Bay and their Avatar.
Dr.Strangelove is the best of all his movies.
I think it was quite easily the worst. It was god awful.
I think it was quite easily the worst. It was god awful.
You're wrong.
I think all Stanley Kubrick movies are exceptional, I especially love Full Metal Jacket. I just didn't like Strangelove at all. I had to stop watching it.

Forgive me if I don't heed the opinion of someone who doesn't even have the attention span to watch Dr. Strangelove through to the end.
It is one of the only two movies I've ever stopped watching before it finished. Normally I HAVE to finish a movie I started. I wouldn't call my attention span into question. I'm an avid movie lover, and like I said, in my whole life, have only had to stop watching two movies. This was one of them.
[editline]08:38PM[/editline]
The other one was Master and Commander

What kind of avid movie lover are you, you can't even finish the fucking movie so that you can actually form your opinion.
Even I watch shit to the end so that I can actually convey why it's bad. If I can muscle through Alien 4 then you should be able to watch Dr. fucking Strangelove.
Yeah I always watch shit to the end, it's like you're purposely not reading what I write. This and one other movie are the ONLY exceptions. And besides, the 3/4 of the movie I had watched was horrible and I couldn't stand it. Even if the last quarter was good that isn't going to make up for the rest and would still overall be a bad movie. I can sit through Alien Resurrection any day over this. Hell I would sit through AVP2 (which I have done) instead of this.
