Nathan Smith, who styles himself the “foreign minister” for the Texas Nationalist Movement, appeared last Spring at a far-right confab in St. Petersburg, Russia. Despite roaming around in his cowboy hat, Smith managed to keep a low-key presence at the conference, which was dominated by fascists and neo-Nazis railing against Western decadence. But at least one Russian newspaper, Vzglyad, caught up with the American, noted that TNM is “hardly a marginal group,”and quoted Smith liberally on the excellent prospects for a partial breakup of the United States. Smith declared that the Texas National Movement has 250,000 supporters—including all the Texans currently serving in the U.S. Army—and they all “identify themselves first and foremost as Texans” but are being forced to remain Americans. The United States, he added, “is not a democracy, but a dictatorship.” The Kremlin’s famed troll farms took the interview and ran with it, with dozens of bots instantly tweeting about a “Free Texas.”
Nor is Texas the lone region for which Russia has cast secessionist support since the Crimean seizure. Venice, Scotland, Catalonia—the Russian media have voiced fervent support for secession in all these Western allies. (Of course, Moscow’s mantra—secession for thee, but not for me—means you’d be hard-pressed to find any Russian official offering support for Siberian, Tatar, or Chechen independence.) “Since the destabilization of the West is on Russia’s agenda, they may try to reach out to the U.S. separatists,” Anton Shekhovtsov, a researcher on Moscow’s links to far-right movements in Europe, told me. Russia wants a “deepening of social divisions in the American society, destabilizing the internal political life.” And certain Texans, rather than running from the taint of an authoritarian backing, have reciprocated.
Okay, it was kind of funny when the Chechen guy tried to offer Mexico a chance to reconquer California, but these "free Texas" types are some pretty dangerous domestic terrorists (nowhere near the numbers they claim to have, but certainly enough to cause some harm), kind of worried what they might end up doing if this support starts manifesting itself in ways other than just the support of Putin's propaganda machine.
What about Georgia or Chechnya? Do they get freedom too? Or just those that are convinent to support?

The article already made that point.

I'm sure the state of Georgia will get Russian support for independence. As for the country Russia has actually been supporting two pro-Russian breakaway states in the northern regions for pretty much the entirety of Georgian independence (obviously the more pro-Western government recognized by the rest of the world gets considerably less friendly treatment).
He literally went to a meetup of Russian neo-nazis.
I would say that's a dangerous man

Are we sure he isn't just an Ocelot cosplayer?

Depends, american neo-nazis can actually put together some scary militant like training camps without breaking the law
Either way an independent Texas would make Rick Perry as well as any other Texas born presidential hopeful which would mean Texas wouldn't get the chance to spread Texas so I doubt Texas would succeed again to try to be the country of Texas .
Is there enough Texas for that post?

I could imagine the amount of Texas getting a boner, men and women just at the thought of being able to defend Texas from the Russians.
Craptasket get to work
I live in Texas and the stupid groups like this are so far in the minority that these news articles are the only time you will ever hear about their existence.
Nobody is fucking stupid enough to think secession is a good idea besides edgy teenagers with no sense of the concept
why aren't they trying to get a refund on the alaska purchase
why aren't they trying to get a refund on the alaska purchase
As silly as it might sound, for a while a lot of Russians were hoping that Texan independence would spur a complete breakup of the United States, giving them the opportunity to annex Alaska. A humorous thought for most now, but that's what happens when you're raised on (neo) Soviet propaganda.
