Hey, I'm having a problem with Windows 8.1. Steam games such as Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 and SFM all refuse to open on start. It says I'm ingame for half a second for my friends, and then the game never starts. It's a pain in the neck, and I've done almost everything I can think of to fix it. Run the games as an Administrator, mess around with the compatibility settings and my graphics card isn't even a month old. I've also validated and re-installed the games over and over, but nothing changes. Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2 and Portal all work fine, it's just those select ones don't work for me, and it's really frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? I've seen countless of forums about it on Steam community, but none of them work for me.
Go to your client\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2 folder and delete every .mdmp file, try starting Left 4 Dead 2 and when your game closes upload the new .mdmp file from that folder and post link here, i'll tell you why it crashes.

The game doesn't even start up, no icon in the start bar. Scratch that. There's a background process for a second, before disappearing.
Did you try running left4dead2.exe from that directory?

Without memory dump files (.mdmp) i can't help you further.

I just sent Steam Support a ticket, in hope that they might have some answers for me. This entire thing is really getting aggravating.
Is it actually starting the process?
Is it actually starting the process?
I believe so. As stated before, the game appears for a moment in background processes before disappearing.
Do you have the proper drivers for your video card installed? (Windows Update drivers are not proper drivers.) Also, do you have the latest DirectX runtimes installed?
Do you have the proper drivers for your video card installed? (Windows Update drivers are not proper drivers.) Also, do you have the latest DirectX runtimes installed?
I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760. And I have DirectX 11.

When I tried to install a driver, this happened : I tried three different drivers and got the same result.
You'll probably have to uninstall the existing graphics drivers before you install the new ones. You can see that you have a botched driver install if none of those other items aren't installed (unless you purposefully chose not to install them.) Go into the device manager, expand "Display Adapters", right click on your video card and click "properties". The go to the driver tab and click the "uninstall" button. When the dialog comes up asking you are you sure, make sure you tick "Delete the driver software for this device" before clicking OK. You might have to restart your computer after doing that, then try installing the Nvidia drivers again.

Check this, you might find some answers : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/328103-33-driver-install-failure
