Controversial glyphosate weedkiller wins new five-year lease in Europe
EU votes to reauthorise the pesticide, ending a bitterly fought battle that saw 1.3 million people sign a petition calling for a ban.
Glyphosate, the key ingredient in the world’s bestselling weedkiller, has won a new five-year lease in Europe, closing the most bitterly fought pesticide relicensing battle of recent times.
The herbicide’s license had been due to run out in less than three weeks, raising the prospect of Monsanto’s Roundup disappearing from store shelves and, potentially, a farmers’ revolt.
Instead, an EU appeal committee voted on Monday to reauthorise the substance despite a petition by 1.3 million EU citizens last week calling for a ban.
In 2015, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, the IARC, famously declared glyphosate “probably carcinogenic to humans,” although several international agencies, including Efsa, subsequently came to opposite conclusions. Monsanto insists glyphosate is safe.
The EU health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said: “Today’s vote shows that when we all want to, we are able to share and accept our collective responsibility in decision making.”
That's all I needed to hear. Spray it down my throat.

Keep in mind that the lead researcher for WHO on this case intentionally withheld data that proved Roundup did not cause cancer, and published the report saying the opposite.
WHO lied on an official report and the EU wanted to ban roundup on the basis of this lie. Thankfully the ban didn't pass.
I remember reading about the study that "proved" that glyphosate caused cancer in experiments involving rats.
They acted surprised when they gave rats as much of the glyphosate-treated food as they could eat and something like 40-60% of them developed tumors.
Problem with that study was that the species of rat they used was the Sprague Dawley, which was bred for medical research and already has a 45-50% chance of spontaneously developing tumors on their own, which can be exacerbated if you over-feed them.
Peer reviewed and approved studies have shown glyphosate doesn't cause cancer or increase incidence of disease in humans.
You can't really say drinking a glass of glyphosate is safe but amounts when used as intended doesn't hurt if ingested. The studies don't account for idiotic wannabe-martyrs drinking it by the glassful.

Source?
And what about the EPA?
Because the studies you're refering to are probably the ones from the IARC?
[editline]27th November 2017[/editline]
And then of course what about kidney and liver diseases, reproductive disorders, neurotoxicity, cardiovascular problems and allergies, all suggested and not yet seen as "safe" ?

Yes, and the one study that actually refutes Roundup being safe (and the one everyone cites in Monsanto lawsuits) ignores evidence.
https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/glyphosate-cancer-data/
The evidence showing a lack of connection between glyphosates and cancer comes from the National Cancer Institute, no relation or cooperation of Monsanto.
So the bottom line is that Roundup does not cause cancers, that we know of anyways. All studies performed show that, with the exception of one fraudulent study that ignored data. So should the product be banned because of one study thats missing data? Probably not. Thats the same logic anti-vaxxers use.
I think something that is missing from discussions is that alternate herbicides are demonstrably more toxic than glyphosate. Modern agriculture becomes a lot harder without any weed control. I suspect that's what ultimately led to the 5 year licence, not so much that glyphosate is completely safe (otherwise it would have been given the 15 year licence it applied for) but rather the alternatives are just worse, at least for now.

Would you drink a full glass of pure ethanol? Swallow a full tube of toothpaste? Down a whole bottle of aspirin?

To be fair, the guy did say that you can drink a quart of it and still be safe. That was pretty dumb of him and opened him up to that question.

In any case, glyphosate is a solid. Saying that you could drink a quart of it is completely meaningless.

ah, getting called out on hyperbolic bullshit never gets old.

I think he's meaning residential concentrate which is a liquid.

It's safe.
So drink some.
I'm not an idiot.
So you're idiotic if you drink it despite it being safe? Does that mean you're idiotic for drinking water then by his logic?
those are hardly safe though?
the problem is the lobbyist clearly states that "i'd be happy to (drink a whole quart)" and "you could drink a whole quart of it and it wont hurt you"
[editline]28th November 2017[/editline]
the appropriate response to the question shouldve been "you wouldn't be able to drink a quart but small amounts in our food does no harm" (regardless of the facts, it would've been better wording for him)
Badly worded is one thing but it's definitely not the sick zinger that most people quoting that video want it to be.
those are hardly safe though?
Theyre safe as long as you follow the label, same thing for Roundup or any other pesticide
I'm convinced people become retarded when they hear something is manufactured by Monsanto.

Yeah sorry, I was uninformed about the subject. Only reason I posted the vid.

The guy said himself you could drink a quart of it and it won't hurt you. Don't try and frame this like the interviewer was being unreasonable by asking him to put his money where his mouth is.
Don't make hyperbolic claims and then act indignant when people give you the opportunity to back them up.

Monstanto really is one of the worst companies still in existence, but their more modern products aren't really dangerous.
The wild west days of pre-EPA pesticides is long gone. M

I could drink a quart of olive oil and it wouldn't hurt me. I still wouldn't do it, because I know the distress it would cause to my digestive system, and I would absolutely act indignant if someone expected me to prove that olive oil is safe for human consumption by chugging it in front of them just because I hyperbolically stated that you could safely do so. It's not a reasonable expectation at all.

He literally said that he "would be happy to" chug it in front of him, not just that it wouldn't harm you.

That kinda plays into where Catbarf said "hyperbolically".
