NEW YORK (AFP) – A significant Pablo Picasso painting was damaged after a woman attending art class lost her balance, fell into "The Actor" and tore it, The Metropolitan Museum of Art said. The unusually large canvas, measuring 77.25 by 45.38 inches (196 by 115 centimeters), sustained a vertical tear of about six inches (15 centimeters) in the lower right-hand corner in the accident on Friday. The museum, located on the eastern edge of New York's Central Park, did not elaborate on why the woman fell. But The Met said the damage did not impact the "focal point of the composition" and that it should be repaired in the coming weeks ahead of a major Picasso retrospective featuring some 250 works at the museum opening on April 27. Repair work should be "unobtrusive," it added. Painted in the winter of 1904-1905, the work hails from Picasso's critical Rose Period, when the artist shifted from the downbeat tones of his Blue Period to warmer, more romantic hues. The period also hints at Picasso's later embrace of abstraction with his signature cubist style. Donated to The Met by automobile heiress Thelma Chrysler Foy in 1952, "The Actor" features an acrobat striking a dramatic pose against an abstract backdrop. It was painted on a used canvas that already contained a painting. Apparently this was a very important piece.
Oh she had to fall somewhere
What a stupid bitch.
Hope she didn't leave any fat on the picture.
Careless slut.
How the hell did she lose balance while in art class? She must have been huge whale.
I tought round objects had radial balance.
What? Gabe Newell likes art?
Oh god, burn her body, use as coal
Why would she try to catch her balance with it? Seriously, it's a painting. How did she even do that? Did she fall onto the artwork?
Stupid bitch.
Knowing Picasso, I'd imagine he'd find a way to turn this to his advantage. That is, if he wasn't dead.
She probably didn't even like art and just took it to make up the credit for her pointless liberal arts degree
Wait, where does it say she was fat?
It doesn't. Sounds more like a skinny bitch who got blown over by the wind.
the artist inside me RAGES :argh:
She probably didn't even like art and just took it to make up the credit for her pointless liberal arts degree
I'm taking Art since it's a retarded requirement for Biomedical Engineering. Let me tell you something, it's not my forte, although it's not hard, but it just takes so long.
SHE MUST BE PUNISHED FOR BEING FAT AND CARELESS. :kratos:
Everybody can be clumsy at times, not just larger-sized people. I understand it is an important painting, but raging about it will do nothing. The damages will be repaired and I am sure the woman feels terrible for what she did.

It was only six inches of tear in a non-focal area, and canvas doesn't leave a huge strip of damage like say, tearing masking tape off of cardboard. Thanks for being reasonable.
Wow, the misogyny train is really rolling today. Facepunch turns: "woman (no other details given) accidentally falls and damages painting" into "dumb fat bitch ruins painting due to stupidity"

So?? If it was a small person you'd hate her just as much. If you care that much anyway.
No! Not The Actor! :saddowns:
art is stupid, especially modern art. "oh some splashes and a cornflake, what might the name of this masterpiece be?" "that's my breakfast from this morning dumbass" <-- how i see it. it's bad news that she broke it, but they can fix it. and even if it was broke... so what? we've got alot of paint covered paper already. art is a pretentious pile of goo elevated by a group of pretentious posh people, nothing more. <--my very dark impression of art. ofcourse, art can also be viewed as irreplacable artifacts. but IMO, it's bullshit if people hate on, as op says, "a fat dumb woman" it's a waste of time.
I didn't know they'd let art students within touching range of a painting like that. It'd be like teaching students drivers how to drive in the parking lot of a Ferrari dealership.
Meh, art...
Why are people such careless idiots...
