Subsidies for small scale solar electricity panels on homes are to be cut, the government has announced, although by less than expected.
The subsidies will be cut by 64%, although this is less than the previous proposal of an 87% reduction.
The cuts have been softened following a storm of criticism.

Domestic solar subsidies were said to be costing households about £7 a year. The industry said the planned cuts announced in the summer have already cost 6,500 jobs.
The government estimates that between 9,700 and 18,700 solar jobs could be lost as a result of the changes to subsidies.

Lord Turner, a former head of the government's advisory Climate Change Committee, said he believed that the Prime Minister was committed in his heart to tackling climate change along with the energy department DECC, but that the Treasury was not.
The government has decided to cut subsidies to householders installing roof top solar panels by 65% just days after agreeing to move swiftly to a low-carbon energy future at the climate change conference in Paris.
The move was confirmed in a Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) report showing that financial aid of 4.39p per kilowatt hour will be available from next month instead of the existing 12.47p.
The new figure means Amber Rudd, the energy and climate change secretary, has rowed back from an original proposal to slash subsidies by 87% to 1.63p after a storm of criticism.
“The government has revised tariffs based on the evidence received,” the department says in its report. “Most of the new tariffs provide for a higher rate of return than previously consulted on and, in most cases, the level of support has increased beyond levels proposed.”
D ecc added that “the level of incentive offered reflects the cost of deployment whilst remaining within the boundaries of European Union state aid approval”.

“In just one month, one nuclear plant at Hinkley would swallow up four years’ worth of subsidies for the whole solar sector. Why are ministers signing a blank cheque for expensive, outdated nuclear power while pinching pennies for an energy source on the cusp of a massive investment boom? This makes no economic sense and will only put up bills in the long run.

Well at least it is better than the previous suggested cuts I guess. It seems a bit odd after Cameron went to Paris and gave has speech about how we have to do something about climate change, and then allow his government to cut solar subsidies so much.
cunt
:snip:
Fucking bunch of cunts.
What's so weird? They only speak about this stuff so they'd seem promising enough in the eyes of people while they do the exact opposite.
Not like we get enough sun for them anyway. :v:
Glad to see the climate talks are pushing our governments in a positive direction.
:speechless:
Ahah! Climate Change deal is so fucking naively overhyped its unreal.
Like our government will do shit about anything else when they're all currently fisting each other over how many terrorists they killed today
I was about to say that this would make sense after hearing so much about typical UK weather.
Solar in the UK is still quite effective, not as effective as in somewhere like Spain obviously but it's still viable. Earlier this year they also gutted onshore wind subsidies, which despite what some will say is very effective. The UK is the best place in Europe for wind power and it's one of the cheapest forms of power generation available.
With the new tariff prices though for solar to work for a home in the UK you really need to get batteries.
Take the money from Solar and put it into Nuclear. Then you'll have an alternative energy source that is actually worth it.
Subsidize coal, cut solar.
Jeeze guys. Whats up with you?

Solar works just fine with cloudy skies.
we need more jeerbs! lets cut this green sector which is growing at the fastest rate of all our sectors!

IF you read the dailymail comments section whenever climate change comes up you'll realise the average Briton is a fucking retarded moron who thinks it's a money making hoax while he sites an unpeer reviewed paper that was funded by an oil company.
so just you guys know ( of topic ) this is the same government that blocked the people from protesting the head of china when he visited same ones who helped Saudi Arabia getting head of uns human right and blocked ai weiwei from Uk

i get pissed off when my brother spams me garbage from yahoo news and then says the hundred sites i get my news from are all liberal conspiracies

Eh? We're phasing out coal, there will be no coal plants in the UK ten years from now

That's true, we will just have a lot more gas ones. Although gas has been the top single contributor to the grid for awhile now.
