The US has warned airlines flying into Russia for the Winter Olympics that explosives hidden in toothpaste tubes could be smuggled on to planes.
The Department of Homeland Security told US media the alert affected direct into Russia as it prepares for the games in Sochi.
The agency said it was not aware of any specific danger to the US at this time.
It is the latest reported threat against the region, which has beefed up security surrounding the games.
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to the BBC that it "regularly shares information with domestic and international partners, including those associated with international events such as the Sochi Olympics".
The US has also placed two warships in the Black Sea in case of a security threat during the games, scheduled for 7-23 February.
Toothpaste tubes wouldn't allow much explosives to make it onboard. Unless it was ONC, you could probably take out a window or blow a hole in a wall with one. Sure that would suck ass, but it's far from destroying a plane. They're designed against getting torn apart by aerodynamic forces if there's a hull breach.
Sure you could get more than one tube onboard, but a guy carrying 5-10 tubes of toothpaste is gonna warrant some attention from security when they check his luggage.

Well, a normal toothpaste tube is 75 ml. If you had 6 guys smuggle 5x75ml. = 450 ml. of explosive on board, you could do some damage. AFAIK M112 demolition charges used by the US Army weight about that much.
Damn your ninja edit.

Maybe he's a Dentist? I don't know.

Yeah a window being blown out isn't that big of a deal. Unless it happens at FL380, then only luck is going to be the deciding factor if that plane will still fly after all the damage that's going to cause. Of course people who aren't strapped in near by are going out, too.
I remember reading of one explosive decompression that started because of glue failing, basically, and ended up making the plane a convertible. One of the flight attendants got sucked out, but her head acted like a button in a shirt, getting caught between the fuselage and a part of the fuselage that was peeled back. Anyway that smashed her head like a grape and when the plane landed you could see a perfect stencil outline of her head in her blood on the side of the aircraft

I find it hard to believe but hey, weird shit happens. She was the only one who died in that incident, and it was caused by glue coming apart allowing condensation inside the aircraft.
So think what a bomb of any sort would do
Trust us guys. We've caught many would-be toothpaste tube bombers.
Losing your teeth to toothpaste[sp](bomb)[/sp]. I bet that's something dentist everywhere didn't see coming.
If you ban toothpaste tubes they're going to start smearing it on themselves
TSA will profile you if you smell minty fresh

You don't need to vaporize the aircraft. Sit someone above the wing, window seat, and detonate it would likely cause enough damage to bring down the plane.

Imagine if they have dogs or TSA/FSB agents sniffing your asshole to see if it smells good or not.
People with good anal hygiene will be sent to Gitmo or some Russian gulag.
You called?
Also I think their main concern is harm of passengers rather than of the plane itself.

This incident has nothing to do with the story. The plane in this incident has flew beyond its life expectancy, lacked regular maintenance, and had visible tear and wear on its airframe. This is why such a large piece of the the cabin ripped away during the decompression because the structures were already weak to begin with.
