http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiyao_Miyazaki Really though, how can you not love this guy. Just when you could never get into Japanese storytelling, this guy bursts through your expensive door, turns on the television and plugs in Spirited Away. His movies are childrens movies, but I find them nonetheless some of the most awesome engaging movies on the scene. If Disney has one valuable(I mean besides their shitty boy-band lineup and Pixar in all its awesome glory)it's this guy. To my knowledge hes not a very well known artist(could be totally wrong about that)either in the East or the West. But nonetheless, hes the only reason I don't start tearing my fucking hair out every-time someone talks about how much they love anime/giant swords. I don't know if anyone on Facepunch has ever heard of the man, that's awesome. If not, you should definitely give his films a look over. Their a great alternative to the non ending line of Dreamwork's 3-D films that keep flung at us. Mr. Miyazaki, keep being awesome. EDIT: Oh god, I realize I've just said I don't like anime right on the internet. :flame:
Didn't Pixar dub Spirited Away?
Kiki's Delivery Service :swoon:
Castle in the sky is a masterpiece...
i think he does put out really good and thoughtful stuff. with that disclaimer aside, i think he is tremendously overrated.
EDIT: Oh god, I realize I've just said I don't like anime right on the internet. :flame:
(its ok not many people here do either)

It's spelled Hayao Miyazaki :colbert: I loved Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, he directs/produces very artistic and creative movies
I'm fairly sure he's pretty well known, especially because of spirited away and ponyo.
Kiki's Delivery Service :swoon:
I like how they make kiki's cat into Troy Maclure. My Neighbor Totoro is an overrated piece of shit in my opinion. Nothing really happens in this movie, you only see Totoro a small part in this movie, and the main conflict [sp]of the girl running away[/sp] is solved in like 10 minutes. However all of the other movies are incredible. This should be more highly regarded.
Because I took level 1 Japanese in school, I watched many Studio Ghibli films. Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke. For some reason, I've never watched Spirited Away, although I recall watching the beginning of it.

It was so bad that Miyazaki put Totoro on his studio's title card. Totoro was my first and my favorite Miyazaki film.
Howl's Moving Castle is up there as one of my favorite movies of all time. Joe Hisaishi's score is brilliant.
I've never heard of this guy, but when I saw the title something told me he made Spirited Away. Love it. One of my top ten favorite movies ever, and Howl's Moving Castle is pretty fantastic too.
Miyazaki is very well known all over the world. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were smash hits internationally, with the former being a very, very high grossing movie, and both of them being winners of several big awards internationally. I love his films. Princess Mononoke was my first Miyazaki film. I was little and my dad let me pick out a movie at Blockbuster, so I picked it because it looked like a cartoon. I had no idea how much of a bloody mess it would be, but I loved it all the same. Spirited Away has to be my favorite one, though. Ponyo didn't really have a conflict, but it was still fun, Howl's Moving Castle is amazing, and Kiki's Delivery Service was a lot of fun, too, if I remember correctly.
Did anyone see his Lupin movie?

I was pretty surprised when I discovered later on that nearly all the animated films I had seen when i was real young were all made by the same guy. He's a legend.
To be honest, I don't really like most of his work, but fuck me, Princess Mononoke was BADASS Like really fucking good, made it into my: Anime films that could pass for not being anime because they don't have typical asinine anime features. Example, Ninja Scroll, Berserk, Jin Roh etc.
Didn't Pixar dub Spirited Away?
pixar? no, disney did they also fucked over dubs for my neighbor totoro, casting dakota fanning's sister as mae
pixar? no, disney did they also fucked over dubs for my neighbor totoro, casting dakota fanning's sister as mae
I like watching most of his movies dubbed, but it may just be me but I prefer the dub of Castle in the Sky rather than the original.
I was pretty surprised when I discovered later on that nearly all the animated films I had seen when i was real young were all made by the same guy. He's a legend.
That exact same thing happened to me, but with Don Bluth
It's spelled Hayao Miyazaki :colbert: I loved Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, he directs/produces very artistic and creative movies
I stand corrected.
I love Ponyo, Spirited Away, and Howls Moving Castle. I still need to see My Neighbor Totorro, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky.
You should chalk up a few of Mamoru Oshii's films on your list. Patlabor and Patlabor 2 are some of his best.
Don't forget Ghost in the Shell.
congratulations, you missed the point of the film
I don't care what the point of the movie was if the plot couldn't be more engrossing. Though calling it a piece of shit was going too far. I appreciated the movie. I just didn't really care about the message they were trying to get across since the movie actually bored me. I'm not an idiot who can't watch a movie without an explosion in it. I just need the plot to actually interest me. Totoro had me so bored though that I was just waiting for something cool to happen to distract me from all the monotony. In other words yes I missed the point, but I don't give a fuck because the movie did not interest me. I still love Miyazaki movies. Just not My Neighbor Totoro.
