It seems to be a trend for beta/scrapped things to get released .
Jeez some of those textures look REALLY good for 1997/1998.
Jeez some of those textures look REALLY good for 1997/1998.
it's pre-rendered environemnts
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
If we had that, than everyone would return Aliens CM and just played the demo.
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
yeah then i could finally play conker 2
it's pre-rendered environemnts
I know but still, it looks comparable to the cinematics in Final Fantasy 7
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
DNF 2001 yuuusssss
That reminds me, Resident Evil for the Gameboy Color was finally released a few months ago. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/02/07/bizarre-resident-evil-gameboy-color-roms-are-available.aspx
I wonder what the collision model for those backgrounds are like, always wondered how they kept track of what was collidable and what wasn't. Also, I will probably try ripping the background images from this to make the beta RPD station in Source.
This is a bit old. There has been 1.5 beta footage on youtube for a while now. Don't exactly know if its quite the same as this, but I think it is at the very least mildly related. Pretty cool how they found this out though, and look at how creepy it all looks... Just as I wait a few days for a second hand RE2 to come, lovely... Holy shit they even got a prototype Berkin and apparently you used to team up with the trucker who died eaten by 4 zombies.

Watching the video and man, those menu sounds bring back some serious memories.
I laughed so hard when Sherry was using the vent and just freaked the fuck out playing howling noises and flying all over the screen.
I need to play this, even if it is broken. Resident Evil 1.5 always looked amazing me, the more authentic police station always appealed to me.
However, industrious fans somehow ended up getting hold of the source code and began fixing it up

ended up getting hold of the source code and began fixing it

source code
wait wait wait, doesn't this mean that modders now have access to the engine and can make their own unofficial Resident Evil games? Complete with new puzzles, weapons, enemies, and areas (with beautiful prerendered environments)?
These guys apparently can.

That would hurt.
"Hey Capcom, heres how you make a good game, and as a bonus, it uses YOUR OLD TECH!" I don't see how Capcom couldn't make cheaper games that stayed true to the original Resident Evil formula and release them digitally on PSN/Live/PC.
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
I'd instantly go for the beta versions of Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask.
I was watching a guy streaming this a couple of days ago, it's so odd how it's always so interesting alpha stuff in games and what doesn't make it in the final product.

Which is sad, because despite being outdated by today's standards, it looks much more interesting than the newer ones. I fear that people are too used to the RE of nowadays, full of action and void of survival, horror and tension.
DNF 2001 yuuusssss
You know that was basically a cutscene right?
You know that was basically a cutscene right?
Incorrect. Charlie Wiederhold, former 3D Realms employee, revealed that most of the scenes in the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 trailer were either fully playable or scripted sequences that would have been experienced in-game exactly as shown. He posted a full breakdown here: http://forums.duke4.net/topic/4164-dnf-2001-breakdown Edit: A helpful video:

The article they linked was a good read, the GBC resident evil was interesting as well
DNF 2001 yuuusssss
Wasn't DNF 2001 just a bunch of scripted scenes you had no control over the guys at 3D realms put together for a trailer, with no gameplay behind it whatsoever ?
I believe it's exactly as you would expect; invisible geometric shapes in a vague configuration of the map.
It's more obtuse that that, apparently, from reading various modding tutorials. Also, extracting shit from the 1.5 disc isn't going well, the iso is 120mb or so but the only files on the disc are the executable, a readme, and some other system file. totalling less then a megabyte. They did some filesystem voodoo and hid the files so that they can't be seen even with 'show hidden folders' and they don't even show up in any disc image tools I have. Any got ideas? I can easily convert the BSS to get nice quality bmps of the backgrounds, they're just hidden so I can't even get at them.
it would be really cool to have access to a database full of alpha's and beta's of every game out there.
I'd play beta of Left 4 Dead.
