Minecraft fans everywhere rejoice.
Need to finish that work project, and wish you had the mental intensity to do it? Just take a synapse-regulating inhibitor, induce temporary autism, and you'll want to ignore your friends and do nothing but number-crunching for days. Autism-inducers could become as popular as Provigil among the geek set by 2020. Last night, in fact, a group German researchers announced they'd perfected the method for inducing autism. (They can also cure it.) Over the past year, researchers have demonstrated several times that they can turn mice autistic by messing with brain chemistry — and then "cure" them using the same techniques. The discoveries could lead to a scenario similar to the one in Vernor Vinge's novel A Deepness in the Sky, where people are given a brain treatment called "focusing" that essentially turns them autistic and makes them obsessive, detail-oriented workers. It might also lead to recreational autism, where people who want to take a break from having messy emotions about other people decide to unplug and enter a state where human relationships are no more important than inanimate objects.
Sources: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6245742.stm http://www.pnas.org/content/105/5/1710.abstract http://io9.com/349956/one-pill-makes-you-autistic-++-and-one-pill-changes-you-back

Oh god it's a pill that makes into for a little while :aaa:
-snip- didn't read article
It might also lead to recreational autism, where people who want to take a break from having messy emotions about other people decide to unplug and enter a state where human relationships are no more important than inanimate objects.
They already have this its called Minecraft.
This would really help me a lot. I have some problems focusing on something, even if I want to do it. Really curious what the risks are though.
Oh that's cool. Now autism won't be an excuse for not having friends.
Wait, why the fuck would you want to induce autism?
Read the article(s), it would make it easier to focus for long periods of time.

Recreational autism? I don't like the sound of this at all. It's a subtle yet slippery slope to a Huxleyan dystopia.
Sounds fun
Read the article(s), it would make it easier to focus for long periods of time.
Adderall already does that, this sounds like ADD drugs on steroids.
Adderall already does that, this sounds like ADD drugs on steroids.
If it's only temporary I don't see the problem.
Doesn't sound safe at all. But can this cure people born with Autism? I couldn't find if they specified it in the article.
some kind of minecraft cheat code
If it's only temporary I don't see the problem.
Well it could lead to dependency or preferring this altered state to reality. I'm not saying that's definitely the case, but it's always a risk with something like this. I just don't like the idea of recreational use. I mean, people are free to do what they want with their bodies, but if this proliferates then we have a large portion of the population as mindless, detail oriented zombies. This is all exaggerated of course, but I think it needs to be considered.
That's neat and all, but I'd be utterly terrified of getting 'stuck' that way.

These arguments make no sense at all, not everyone is constantly drunk all the time, are they?
Just like if marijuana was legal everyone would always be constantly high. Now I'm not saying this pill could have those effects at all, I have no idea how its chemistry works, but if the "euphoria" it produces is appealing enough, it very well could be preferable to reality for people.

It's not hard to get, your friends that got swallowed by that shit are idiots.
This...would be okay I guess. I mean, maybe then i would do homework (but in 2020 i guess i won't be in school)
Just like if marijuana was legal everyone would always be constantly high. These arguments make no sense at all, not everyone is constantly drunk all the time, are they?
Well alcoholics. But they usually have emotional issues, or are weak willed
Well alcoholics. But they usually have emotional issues, or are weak willed
but he said it would be everyone all the time. That's clearly not the case.
but he said it would be everyone all the time. That's clearly not the case.
True true.
but he said it would be everyone all the time. That's clearly not the case.
I never said everyone all the time. I said a portion of the population could prefer this. Have you been around someone whose lifestyle is getting high? They're boring and useless, and I've seen it happen to people with real potential. And to respond to what you said earlier, my friends are idiots for getting that sucked into weed, yes. But it happens, and when one of the first things to come to these reporters' minds when writing about this new drugs is its recreational potential, that really worries me.
Sounds fun to me. The validity of your intelligence and thus productive output would be a bit iffy though.
If you're "addicted" to weed you probably weren't very motivated before you did the stuff anyways.
I don't know who would want to become autistic. Like, hey man let me take this pill and shit my pants real quick.
