Reporting from Salt Lake City, NPR's Howard Berkes filed this report for our Newscast unit:
"Within minutes of the federal court decision, the Salt Lake County Clerk's office was inundated with gay couples seeking marriage licenses. "And marriages were performed in the lobby and hallways long after the office was scheduled to close. The Utah attorney general's office hopes to get an emergency stay in the next few days from a federal appeals court in Denver. "Republican Gov. Gary Herbert condemned the ruling as judicial activism that overrides the will of the people. Voters in this predominately Mormon state overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004. But U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby ruled that the law irrationally demeans the dignity of same sex couples."
"I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah," Herbert said in a statement.

"I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah," Herbert said in a statement.
Too bad. This is the problem with democracy. Having "the people" decide the rights of others results in all kinds of abuse. This is why we have a federal system in place in the U.S.
"Emergency! Emergency! We are in a state of severe emergency! Men are having buttsex! EMERGENCY!" Also, I love it whenever conservatives try and say "those damn activist judges" whenever a judge lets a group of people have rights or reverses some backwards law.
"Voters in this predominantly Mormon state overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004. But U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby ruled that the law irrationally demeans the dignity of same sex couples."
So what they're saying is that the dignity of homosexuals is less important than the outdated opinion of a unrelated group of people. Nice.
Also, I love it whenever conservatives try and say "those damn activist judges" whenever a judge lets a group of people have rights or reverses some backwards law.
Yeah but when some judges say money is speech, they're conservative heroes. All we did was legalize bribery.
Oh noes.. Utah is having a Gaypocolipse!
The Mormon church wants to intervene and have a say in the court proceedings, too. But there's no way that they'll be able to, due to the separation of church and state. It's pretty pathetic how homophobic my state is.
On one hand, I can understand the homophobia. Not something I would be terribly "into". On the other hand, why should anyone give 2 cents about who is marrying who or what they are doing with their love life? As a church.. well sure, they got their followers and way of life. Thats great for them, but Utah (or any state/city/country) includes more than one narrow group. The ban being in place to begin with is a black mark against the dignity of the folks that put it in place. It tells me that they are not against strong-arming or intimidating folks into their way of life. What a lovely thought: "Think and do as we do or there will be repercussions."
Oh noes.. Utah is having a Gaypocolipse!
How fabulous...
I think until these old idiots are pushed out and younger people, or people of a newer generation move in that'll allow gay marriage, then the best compromise is to just give the LGBT community an option where they can be a legally recognized partnership that affords them the same rights (Over a thousand) that married couples get We live in the USA that constantly preaches equality for all, yet ever since it became a country it has been not that. Who gives a FUCK who someone sleeps with. If it's consentual then why the fuss? At the very least give them access to the same fucking rights as everyone else. It isn't like it's a contagious epidemic. Homosexuality can be witnessed in just about every species on the planet to the same percentage, so to say it isn't natural and that's why you disagree is dumb. It isn't natural for your ass to travel at 60 miles per hour on an interstate, or at mach .75 at 36,000 feet in the air, either
On one hand, I can understand the homophobia. Not something I would be terribly "into".
Not being homophobic doesn't mean you have to watch gays have sex or anything. You can be repulsed by man-on-man sex and not be homophobic.
Not being homophobic doesn't mean you have to watch gays have sex or anything. Pretty sure Utahs anti gay sex law thingy only passed because the Mormon Church paid to put it through. It was a pretty big thing when it was being 'voted' on over here.
errr, repulsed is a pretty strong word if one is not homophobic, i guess the term you're looking for is "not giving a shit".
idk. i think you can be repulsed by homosexual sex without being repulsed by homosexuality or homosexual individuals. i mean i'm pretty sure that hetereosexual sex is repulsive to homosexuals as well. again, idk for sure.

what an emergency, the fact that people who love each other can get married.
their efforts are as futile as their ideals are outdated flee from your homes, protect your children, prepare for the raining of rainbow skies Utah will be showered upon, a storm of gay and the storm do cometh
Also, I love it whenever conservatives try and say "those damn activist judges" whenever a judge lets a group of people have rights or reverses some backwards law.
Or how they will vehemently defend anything of theirs that the court rules "unconstitutional", yet scream like babies the very word when they don't get their way.
errr, repulsed is a pretty strong word if one is not homophobic, i guess the term you're looking for is "not giving a shit".
One can be repulsed by foot fetishism and not look down on foot fetishists.
errr, repulsed is a pretty strong word if one is not homophobic, i guess the term you're looking for is "not giving a shit".
I give a shit. I have gay friends and I care if they get hurt in some way because of asshat rules or laws. Don't really care to share sexy time with them though. I feel the same about feta cheese. Repulsed is a good word for it. -edit It shouldn't matter if one has gay friends or not for this issue to be upsetting. Who is the state that it can regulate the legitimacy of a domestic partnership? Fuck them.
errr, repulsed is a pretty strong word if one is not homophobic, i guess the term you're looking for is "not giving a shit".
I'm repulsed by coffee, it's one of the worst things I ever tasted, and yet I don't condemn every coffee drinker I know. I just decline to drink coffee.
Oh yeah Herbert? Well I'm disappointed that the government is trying to override the people's legitimate right to marry. Fucking Herbert. [editline]22nd December 2013[/editline]
Always surprises me when someone is from Utah on FP.
Why?
Not being homophobic doesn't mean you have to watch gays have sex or anything.
Too bad. This is the problem with democracy. Having "the people" decide the rights of others results in all kinds of abuse. This is why we have a federal system in place in the U.S.
Ironic how Mormons had the same problem with Polygamy.
Utah is a shithole and Mormons are morons Nothing new here [editline]22nd December 2013[/editline]
Pretty sure Utahs anti gay sex law thingy only passed because the Mormon Church paid to put it through. In good news, the mayor of Salt Lake City stayed at the courthouse all night to officiate marriages
Why?
Cause I just really don't see much Utahness from the posters, I quite rarely see people in games from Utah as well. I'm also the only one seemingly standing up for UTOPIA; even though a majority of FPers want very fast internet. [editline]23rd December 2013[/editline]
Utah is a shithole and Mormons are morons Nothing new here
'Ey man, no need to be a twat about it, I could say the same about any place that has a higher majority of a specific religion. And furthermore, there are plenty of Atheists in Utah: Hell American Atheist is having a 2014 conference here (Which I'm attending). Utah becoming rapidly liberal, which makes me very happy.
Utah is a shithole and Mormons are morons Nothing new here
utah isn't bad, just don't come during the winter unless you bring lots and lots of padded winter clothing, it gets cold I'm actually surprised at this though, all the people where I currently live are ok with gay marriage
As a resident of Utah I have to say situations like this are very strange. Whenever anything about approving gay marriage gets mentioned, a huge number of anti-gay marriage people just appear out of nowhere. In day to day life if you ask someone on the street what they think of gay marriage 9 out of 10 will say it's okay.
