Video Drivers Have Stopped Responding/Blue Screens
22 replies, posted
My computer uses three NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 graphics cards (each with 1 GB memory) for display, and I have SLI disabled because my PSU can't support it properly. I've gotten used to my screen flashing black for a moment, then getting "The display drivers have stopped responding and have recovered" pop up every once in a while, but since yesterday I've been getting them a lot more. The most recent thing I've done with the cards was I removed and installed the newest drivers, version 275.33. Yesterday and today alone, I've gotten 3 blue screens. Is there any way to stop this, or is my GPU just dying out?

The only thing I currently have open right now is Opera, and I just got the non-responding message.

Could be overheating. Check temps
For the "The display drivers have stopped responding": I've had this problem and was unable to fix it. The only "solution" i've read about is to buy faster RAM. However, ever since i installed linux, it works perfectly.
The bluescreens are from a different problem. Have you tried only using one gpu? Can you give us a picture of HWmonitor after some use on the computer?
I have plenty of RAM, so I don't think that's the problem (unless I misunderstood you). It's not overheating, these are the temperatures immediately after a not-responding error:

I'll give HWMonitor a try.
Those temperatures are fine, we don't need a hwmonitor screenshot.
Can your powersupply handle all your parts? can you try using only one GPU?

I doubt my PSU could handle everything, which is why I'm running with SLI disabled, so yeah, I'm only using one.
Physically remove two of them from the motherboard, then try again.

My computer is watercooled, and I know next to nothing about computers when it comes to tangible stuff, would just unplugging the power for them suffice?
I'm unsure, but having it plugged into the powersupply would still leak quite a bit of power to them. I beleive that is your problem. Try unplugging them, but i recommend taking them out.
Where did you buy this computer? Do you still have a warranty on it?
They're unplugged, and Speccy is only showing one GPU. Should I just do things like this until I get the error again?

It's custom built, and over a year and a half old, so I dunno. I still have all the boxes for the parts, though.
Yeah that's perfect, wait and see if you get anymore bluescreens. If you do then tell us.
Alright. Thanks for all the help.

Weird, I've gotten two flashes like what happens when the drivers stop responding, but neither of them showed the error message.

I get that too; it's the same error the bubble just fails to show. You can usually find the error in your event log or stability record (or something like that)

The plot thickens.
If you're getting them without getting blue screens (or the Linux equivalent), then I guess it doesn't matter. Thanks again.
The video card has probably died.
If it's the NVLVDTKDDM or whatever the fuck it is crashing, I recall someone somewhere had a thread on the error. I don't know where it is unfortunately but it's a rampant issue with lots of nVidia drivers.

NVLDDMKM is the craziest thing I've seen. What's fun is that years ago back when it was even more a problem if you went on the Nvidia forums all the people who worked for Nvidia always (always) blamed the user. It's the reason I went to ATI.
I contacted nvidia directly and they didn't help at all with nvlddmkm driver crashing. The error doesn't persist on linux, and all the games i play work on linux so i'm happy.
If you're really desparate about fixing it you can install linux.

I went to ati for similar problems and I'm having worse problems with them.
I have a thread on this here with some info and things you can try. In my case it turned out to be either bad RAM or some sort of problem running all of it in dual-channel mode. Hope it helps.
Well, I got another bluescreen. From Windows:

Interesting, that appears to be Avast!s sandbox driver.

Avast caused that one.
