The decommissioned warship arrived after being towed down the California coast from the Port of Richmond. The Iowa will be permanently berthed in the port and operated as a museum by the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Pacific Battleship Center, which was selected over a San Francisco Bay area organization. The battleship was first commissioned in 1943 and saw action in World War II and the Korean War. It was decommissioned for the final time in 1990 and spent the past decade in the Suisun Bay mothball fleet. The vessel's hull will be cleaned before it is brought into the harbor Saturday. A tugboat will initially tow the Iowa to a temporary mooring, then lead it down the harbor's main channel to its permanent berth June 9, Crowley Maritime Corp. said. The museum is scheduled to open July 7, following a reunion of USS Iowa veterans. ___
http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/uss-iowa-reaches-california-1449473.html
That ship looks awesome. I love big ships with big stuff and big guns on it.
I love big ships with big stuff and big guns on it.
i've always wanted to know how loud the BOOM those guns make when fired simultaneously is
Battleships look so kool, I wish I could see the Bismark riding the waves.
I'm glad to see the Big Stick is getting a good resting place.
And at the end of each tour you get to fire off a shell from one of the ships Bofors 40mm autocannons.
And then this happens
For those who want to get a hard-on from pure firepower.
Good. Nothing I hate more than watching old warships get scrapped. They're absolutely beautiful works of craftsmanship, and they're a part of history.
PLEASE tell me they're going to open almost all of the ship to tourists. I love how you can tour the Midway in San Diego but it just doesn't feel like they opened up some parts of the ship that they should've.
These old battleships have to be the only weapon system the US has ever retired because it just didn't need to fuck that much shit up anymore.
i've always wanted to know how loud the BOOM those guns make when fired simultaneously is
I've heard from some old navy guys that those ships would literally move 40 feet sideways when you would fire all of the guns in one direction
These old battleships have to be the only weapon system the US has ever retired because it just didn't need to fuck that much shit up anymore.
We brought them out during the Gulf war to dickslap Saddam.
I hope they have a coin slot machine, 20 cents to fire the gun 5 times with live ammo
And then this happens
A terrible movie happens?

Damn I wanna see that, went to see the USS Intrepid last summer, another WWII ship and it was sweet as shit. You don't really get the feel of the hugeness of a carrier until you've actually been on one. What made it even better was that they have tons of helicopters and jets on the flight deck.
I wanted to watch it port, but I missed it. I'll check out the museum after it opens.
If only they kept the sub my dad was on, USS Skipjack. It's razorblades by now :C
One of the cannons seems to keep dropping after every shot.
It's called recoil, the shells are sixteen inches wide
So we take railguns... and triple mount them on ships!
One big fat target vs multiple smaller targets. Unless you fancy the idea of coating every square metre of the ship in CIWS systems.

USS Kearsarge [editline]31st May 2012[/editline]
So we take railguns... and triple mount them on ships!
Railgun broadsides!
Wasn't the Iowa the settings of that really really REALLY terrible B-movie American Warships? It was the B Movie knock off of Battleship. Basically the Iowa was the only ship able to fight the aliens because it had been restored to WW2 condition so the alien EMP weapons wouldn't effect it. Kinda like how in Metal Gear Solid 4 they used the Missouri because it hadn't been integrated with nano tech. ... What were we talking about?
One of the cannons seems to keep dropping after every shot.
The massive recoil pushing the ship back, and the stabilizer those cannons have keeping it on target, I believe. I think the Iowa was our last ship with those huge ass guns on them, too. Could be wrong about that, though
Title scared me for a second, until I got to the "as a museum". Scrapping an Iowa-class battleship would piss a lot of people off real quick, there's a reason every one built is still around.

The reason why the ship is called "Iowa-Class Battleship" is because the Iowa was the first of the sort to be made.
I live in Montana, the successor to the Iowa class was going to be the Montana class. Even bigger and more up-gunned, but never built. We're still the only state to not really have any modern warships named after us.
