I decided to buy GTA IV for pc a few days ago, i saw that there were some pretty awesome mods and a video editor so it looked interesting. So what my problem is when I play for a while the screen goes black, but for some reason i can still see the HUD. This mostly happens when in combat, atleast thats what I have noticed. Here is a picture that i got of it. Any help is appreciated.
Try updating your directX and video card drivers

I updated my drivers... it wasn't that because it still goes black after a while. Any ideas?

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=472434 This seems pretty relevant to your problem. Have you installed any mods recently, as you seem to want the 'awesome mods'. If you have, I recommend you uninstall them and try again after.
Yeah i have got some mods. Contagium (zombie mod) and Simple Native Trainer.
This can be overheating. Download Furmark and run it with the temperature log function on for 10 minutes.
Yeah i have got some mods. Contagium (zombie mod) and Simple Native Trainer.
Uninstall those 2 mods that you have installed and try again. If you've overwritten default game files and you forgot to take backups of the original files, you may need to reinstall GTAIV or if you have Steam, right click the game, click 'Properties' and on the 'Local Files' tab click 'Verify integrity of Steam cache'.
Ok i removed the mods and the original files are there. The problem is as soon as i get into combat this happens. I go around doing the missions that just need me to do a simple task, no problem. But if i get cops after me or get into a gun fight with a bunch of people after a while the screen does this. I had got three stars to see if it would work because i knew it mostly happened in combat, but after a little bit of a chase i got out and started to shoot, they got a couple shots in to but then the screen goes black, but the hud is still there.
So, it obviously seems like you've got a hardware/windows issue here. Nothing to do with GTAIV. I recommend doing what taipan says.
Seriously, no one has said anything about trying to run GTA IV on that system? XP itself probably uses almost a GB of RAM, and I always see GTA IV having 1.4GB+ RAM usage. And a 7800? C'mon really...
I had the same, it's just overheating, maybe get a new fan or something? or blow the dust out of it, dust is also a common problem
