The Nobel committee in Norway praised him for his peace agreement with Farc rebels, signed last month after four years of negotiations. However, Colombians narrowly rejected the deal in a referendum last weekend. The conflict has killed about 260,000 people have been killed. More than six million have been internally displaced.
This prize is a joke.
This prize is a joke.
I thought this one was quite decent. At least from the basic things I've read.
Honestly this is pretty well-deserved I think. The deal didn't go through but there's still peace and potential for negotiation and compromise in the future.
You can't really knock them for giving the Nobel peace prize to a guy who has tried to bring peace to one of the world's longest wars It is just a bit awkward that they rejected it
They probably voted for the award when it looked like the deal was going to get completed.
The people of Colombia rejected it by a 50.22% majority. You can't blame the President for that, he did his job, he tried. It didn't work, but that's not his fault, it's the Colombian people's.
at least they have sort of a reason to give him the peace prize obama got it for increasing drone strikes in the middle east
at least they have sort of a reason to give him the peace prize obama got it for increasing drone strikes in the middle east
talk about awkward
:tried: In all seriousness I hope things work out so that no more blood is spilt over this stupid conflict. Sure the FARC can realise that they won't be able to get their own way after years of trying to strong arm people.
i kind of feel like peace treaties shouldn't be something that the people democratically vote for
Absolutely, this is something it can not be put up to democratic vote.
Well, he tried. That's what matters, I think its' ridiculous that the suffering will continue though even if the peace deal could be a stepping stone. Let's hope the Peace Prize benefits future peace talks.
Among the other nominees were the White Helmets and Greek islanders. In retrospect, the White Helmets are probably the most deserving of this award, but I would be lying if it wouldn't be nice to get some positive recognition after this decade of utter shit.
The Nobel Peace Prize has always been very contentious and sometimes a little too crazy in their selection. The other Nobel Prizes are well worth their weight though.
Looking at the history of prize winners, it's a high chance Duterte might be the next candidate
The problem is the institution cannot find candidates that aren't complete dick waving fuckheads anymore.

If the referendum had a condition that would automatically accept the deal if turnout was below a certain threshold, there would be celebrations in Bogotá as we speak.
Not allowing peace treaties to be decided by the people in some ways is very risky because that'd allow some major loopholes.
He has just announced that he will donate the prize money to victims of the conflict https://www.yahoo.com/news/santos-donate-nobel-prize-money-colombia-conflict-victims-201319541.html
A peace treaty should never be decided by the mob.
at least they have sort of a reason to give him the peace prize obama got it for increasing drone strikes in the middle east
while obama's nobel prize was pretty much "hey youre a black president" he has done a lot to reduce conflict through negotiations, the iran nuclear deal being one, but the world just has so many nations vying for breathing room these days that its gotten more violent idk why a peace treaty had a refferendum condition though, the elected government should have had enough sovernty to ratify and enact it on its own without leaving it to the rule of mob
