just a quick question. the PC I'm getting from a friend currently has a Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz and I was wondering if the Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66GHz is a decent upgrade. if you need to know the motherboard is a Asus P5BW-LA. I don't know much about upgrading parts since I'm mainly a Mac user and never really upgraded anything, but I have helped friends build PCs from Newegg.
It isn't a very big upgrade, you should save your money for a bigger upgrade down the road.
really? it kind of seems like a decent upgrade. what would you recommend then? I have like $150 i can spend. maybe a AMD motherboard and cpu since they make good budget stuff. but then I'll need new ram.

If you want to game with it then you could consider buying a new graphics card, but you'd want to find the details on the power supply.
I have a 4650 and it does what I need it to do.
I have a 4650 and it does what I need it to do.
Then you should just save your money. Also, that motherboard doesn't support the E8200
why not? the cpu is LGA 775 and the motherboard uses a LGA 775 Socket. they should be compatible.
i don't know about P5BW-LA but P5B supports Q6600, as for 1333FSB CPU's they will work but with overclocked FSB, and you have to put 6400 RAM in 5300 mode in order to boot
that sounds like a lot of work for a "simple" upgrade...
Is it an HP that you're buying? Give us complete specs
I"m not buying it, a friend is giving it to me since he just built a new one. Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13 GHz Asus P5BW-LA 500 GB (2 x 250) 7200 rpm hard drives 2 GB RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) ATI 4650 512MB GDDR2 300 watt psu
When i search up that mobo, I get this http://www.pcworld.com/shopping/detail/prtprdid,52584024-sortby,retailer/pricing.html It's made by HP?
yea, the motherboard it has looks a bit different. it's green, lol [editline]07:39PM[/editline] it's this HP http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-pavilion-media-center/4507-3118_7-32034980.html?tag=mncol;psum [editline]07:39PM[/editline] with an after market gpu
this? here read this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/259328-28-upgrading-asus-p5bw-board if this guy is using the same mobo then you'll have to flash it, unless asus updated some drivers.
yea, that's it and thanks for the link, I shall investigate. [editline]07:51PM[/editline] lol, no help. all the replies say build a custom PC. I'll just buy some new parts around christmas time. [editline]07:53PM[/editline] only possible upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115002 but it's no longer available :frown: [editline]07:57PM[/editline] or I could get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117134 but it's no longer available too
why not? the cpu is LGA 775 and the motherboard uses a LGA 775 Socket. they should be compatible.
That's like saying you can put a V12 engine in a Ford Fiesta because its an engine and it should automatically work. Just because it's the same socket, doesn't mean it can support all processors. It's totally up to the chipset on the motherboard as to which processor it can use.

I'm just going to replace the motherboard, cpu, psu, and ram for christmas.
