[quote] The ferry struck Gil Island on British Columbia’s northern coast and sank on March 22, 2006, killing two passengers.
Lilgert, the navigating officer, said he did everything he could to steer the Queen of the North through rough weather and avoid Gil Island. But the ferry hit land, and two passengers were never seen again: Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette.

In a nutshell: Navigator and his ex were on the only people on the bridge early in the morning and somehow the ferry drifted off course, hit an island and then sank in about 600m of water. He was caught lying on the stand several times during the trial, notably about making a course correction to avoid a small boat, which was not seen on radar, nor was the course correction logged by the computer. There was also speculation they were also using the bridge furniture for other uses.
