I'm wondering if it's possible for windows to put overwrited things into the recycling bin instead of complete off my harddrive.
I don't understand.
if I drag something with the same name into the same folder it tells me if I want to overwrite, and if I press yes, the original one is gone forever. is is possible to get the original to go to the recycling bin instead
Uhhh it's called right clicking in a folder and doing "Undo Move"
This has been in since XP...

he's not asking if he can undo it, he's asking if he can make the files go to the recycling bin
To actually answer his question, no, when a file is overwritten/replaced it is removed, there's no way of currently putting the old file into the recycle bin automatically.
This would be rather usefull actually.
There's a rename feature so the old file will get renamed instead.
Well Windows 7 has a Previous Versions feature (as did Vista). However it doesn't monitor every file or folder. Right click -> Restore Previous Version.

No, it renames the new file. It would be much more useful if it renamed the old file though.
Oh well my bad, I never really use it.
