Windows 7 still being sold on up to 93% of British PCs
The vast majority of British-assembled PCs are being sold with Windows 7, not Windows 8, according to several system builders contacted by PC Pro.
One company told PC Pro it was still selling 93% of its machines with Windows 7 installed.
Paul Redford, chairman of Manchester-based Computer Planet, has sold more than 500 systems in January, with only 20% of them running Windows 8. It’s a far cry from the sales figures he expected after the release of the touch-friendly OS.
"When Windows 8 was first released, as per Microsoft’s requests, we sold our systems with Windows 8," said Redford, who thought it would "soon become the standard".
His customers quickly began to specify systems with Windows 7, and said Windows 8 customers "took delivery and wanted to change back to Windows 7" – a process Redford described as a "nightmare".
Redford changed the default installation from Windows 8 to Windows 7 and now offers both systems on all of his machines. Redford is also "considering offering an open source Start menu [for Windows 8] with an option to disable the Start screen" as a free option for his customers.

Because Win7 is a fantastic OS
Yeah, I'm not surprised.
It's good for those who like Windows 7, but I much prefer Windows 8.
To each its own.
Not a big surprise at all. Win8 was a big flop.
When I next upgrade I'll go with Windows 7; I don't think Windows 8 will be right for me, especially considering what craziness Microsoft is getting up to nowadays...

it wasnt a big flop
I get windows 8 free from my uni so gonna try that with a modified start menu. I don't really see the difference between 7 and 8 if i can ignore metro.
that's weird. All computers here in Panama started shipping Windows 8 inmediately after launch date. Computers with Windows 8 are not a rare sight anymore.
and why the hell can't I buy a copy
PC world told me they don't sell them anymore and the microsoft website refuses to acknowledge it Windows 7 exists
Getting a keys been hell since my windows 8 totally broke
being a former vista user, I'm really happy with my w8.
personally, W8 is a much better OS from 7 but MS could have done more to separate itself more from W7. Plus I like that Microsoft is preparing themselves for the all-touch future. ***(THIS DOESN'T MEAN KEYBOARDS AND MICE ARE BEING REPLACED SO SHUT THE FUCK UP)***
British PC retailers pay more attention to their customers than Microsoft does it seems.
Windows 8 isn't a bad OS at all. I much prefer it to Windows 7. Most people that seem to hate it haven't yet tried it for themselves.

PC World probably put 8 on everything in the hopes that you'll pay their GeekSquad to put 7 back on

I tried it. It's pointless to have if you already own Windows 7.
Only took 3 posts before you turned this into a Win 7 vs Win 8 thread, gg
There's no point to upgrade from 7 to 8, 8 is literally almost exactly the same as 7
I tried it. It's pointless to have if you already own Windows 7.
The reduced boot time and other optimizations are worth it in my opinion. And it's rather cheep in price compared to previous versions of windows.

While I'll have to disagree with you there, as it does improve some performance, it is not worth the current price and it's better for most to just get Windows 7. I imagine the cheaper price of Windows 7 is why it's still a predominant OS; for instance when Vista/7 came out XP was still the main shipping OS for a while.
Purchased windows 8 for $48 dollars.
Not a single problem with the OS yet.
I've had less compatibility issues than I had on 7.
Not having a start menu hasn't hindered operations; there have been shortcuts since win95..
It's faster.... O.O
I honestly don't see where the hate comes from?
When I went to PC World there was only one laptop with Windows 7 left in the whole shop.
Not a big surprise at all. Win8 was a big flop.
Not so much a "flop" as a sort of unnecessary step, in the wrong direction.
Windows 7 will be the new XP.
The misinformed "everything in windows 8 is like metro" crowd is incredibly annoying.
Anyways, I got Windows 8 when it was 15 bucks because I wanted something fresh and new, and also because I wanted to finally have an authentic Windows install.
I find that it is a great OS. I like it a lot.

Because I already have a perfectly capable, brilliant operating system installed? Why should I pay more money to fix what isn't broken?

You don't have to? That doesn't give you the right to complain about win8 though. You can complain when you upgrade and find problems, you can't complain if the upgrade isn't affecting you. Shit, if anything it's saving your money. Quit bitching about things that have no impact on you.

Learn from the best of windows 8 users, always judge something you have never tried.

Windows 8. Runs 80% of games
Windows 7. Runs 100% of games

Everyone that has something against my opinion has to be misinformed!
Get off your high horse.

I think the 'defenders of shit' crowd is worse than both by far.

Its well known that there are game incompatibilities (primarily regarding DRM, how about that) with Win8.
windows 8 is just as good as windows 7
that's a problem though - you'd think they would have had some significant improvements to justify a new OS but nope!
