It's nearing the end of the year and it's been a pretty damn good year for gaming in my opinion. I think it's a good time to come up with a list of personal highlights and share them. Here are mine in no particular order: The Walking Dead: Season Two (episode 1) I personally think telltale has handled this franchise the best out of anyone. Video games are such a fitting medium for this franchise and telltale has shown that they fully understand that by focusing on interactivity, quick decision making and character relationships. I can't go into much more detail about why I like this particular episode without spoiling very important plot points and I definitely don't want to spoil season 1 for anyone who hasn't played it, so I'd urge anyone who hasn't to give it a try. The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 The reasons I like this game are pretty similar to the reasons I like the walking dead, but it's worth noting that the concept is really creative and unlike anything I've really experienced in a story before and it's also very fitting for telltale's formula of storytelling in different ways, as you play as a pretty widely disliked but fair sheriff that's just trying to do his job, and when you're put in a position like that it really makes you consider certain decisions and the impact they'll have on how people view you. Again I don't want to spoil too much but I'd recommend it. The Stanley Parable I'm not even going to try to explain this game. Just play it. Spelunky It was technically released earlier on XBLA and PSN but it came out on PC this year and I didn't know it existed until this year so I'm gonna count it. A really fun and challenging procedurally generated "roguelike" platformer with a nice artstyle and great soundtrack, a lot of replay value, a high skill ceiling, and a dedicated competitive community. I've gotten a lot of playtime out of it and have spent a lot of time watching people play it on streams and will probably continue to play/watch it regularly for a long time. Rayman Legends One of the most solid 2D platformers I've ever played. The controls and level design are polished as hell, the artstyle and soundtrack are ridiculously charming and it's just an all around pleasant, polished and rewarding experience. Definitely one of my favourite 2D platformers of all time. Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Alphadream has blown me away once again with this installment. I have no idea how they manage to make every new installment in this series so fresh and imaginative. I was worried that the technological upgrade would result in them butchering the artstyle but they ended up absolutely nailing it, it's probably the most visually impressive game I've ever played. The soundtrack is also fucking fantastic and the new gameplay mechanics within the dream world are really cool. The story and dialogue aren't really as interesting as the previous installments and I think at times its a bit annoying with tutorials and hand-holding but it's forgiveable because everything else is just so pleasant and it really sets itself apart from the other games in the series in a lot of ways, and I respect that a lot.
Stanley Parable.
Out of the games of this year that I played. Bioshock Infinite.
The Stanley Parable. It was the only game that i played from this year. :(
Although I didn't play it I saw numerous playthroughs and have to say The Last of Us is my GOTY. As for games I actually played I'd go with Bioshock Infinite with Papers, please as second. Then The Stanley Parable. There were few others but this is my top 3. Overall this year I mostly explored the indie genre, most of AAA titles I got were a bit disappointing.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengance The hypest shit
I think Path of Exile deserves a mention
The Walking Dead: Season Two (episode 1). (It was only about 2 hours long but it utilized every second of that time perfectly.) Starbound I wanna say Project Zomboid because I only just got it this year and I know it's been out for a while but it was only released on Steam a short while ago so GOTYEY
Bioshock Infinite and Spec Ops: The Line (I know it came out last year, but I never got around to it) When I finally did play them both, I did it back to back. Bioshock tore my heart out while Spec Ops repeatedly tried to kick me to death. EDIT Jesus Christ, I forgot about GTA V. Yeah, that's one of them.
Haven't played many new games this year actually. Of the ones I did get, I really like AC: Black Flag on the PS4, and if it wasnt so buggy and lacking polish than Contrast would have definitely been a strong contender.
Infinite, mainly because of Elizabeth.
The Last of Us was masterful in creation of a truly involving character-driven plot and complementing it with tense, desperate Third Person Shooter gameplay that felt much deeper and rewarding than the typical gameplay of the genre. But the one game that really sticks in my mind this year has to be The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. It's a sequel to a game than I can honestly say is "part of my childhood" and it lives up to it completely, While it will never be a better game than A Link to the Past (even if purely because of the nostalgia value in A Link to the Past), it is damn sure the best Zelda game in a very long time.
GTAV was pretty great. Even if the Online launch was a bit... iffy.
Righteous Slaughter 7
I really liked Assassin's Creed and GTA V, but then again those were the only major games I played this year
GTA Fiveeeeeee
GTA V all the way.
Papers Please and Spelunky
I didn't like anything this year. I was going to say Far Cry 3 but it came out last year
The Stanley Parable, GTA V (I have mixed feelings, but it was a great effort), Killer Instinct even though it's pretty much the end of the year so it barely counts.
FarCry 3: Blood Dragon.
Monster Girl Quest Part 3 Because I didn't get to play most of the stuff that came out this year
GTA V I'm digging starbound a lot the PC release of Deadly Premonition was nice.
COD: Ghosts Greatest game EVER. No.. just no. I really like Bioshock Infinite and BF4.
GTA 5 and Bioshock Infinite were the only major titles I played this year so it would be one of them.
COD: Ghosts Greatest game EVER. No.. just no. I really like Bioshock Infinite and BF4.
You list off something and joke about it being garbage and then you post some of the two biggest letdowns of the year?
Gone Home I am just kidding, please don't send people to kill me again Grand Theft Auto V is pretty good.
GTA V & The Last of Us They're tied, i cannot decide!
Starbound Shadowrun Returns Rogue Legacy Risk Of Rain Every made in 2013 game I've played this year was an indie game. I would have put Deus Ex: Human Revolution Directors Cut, but I believe its still considered a 2011 game.
Metro: Last Light
