• Science Confirms: Holding a Gun Really Does Make You Look Like a Tough Guy
Scientists have discovered that people think men who are carrying a weapon are bigger than they actually are. Researchers from UCLA asked hundreds of people guess the size and muscularity of four men based solely on photographs of their hands holding a range of objects. It was found that brandishing a weapon makes men appear bigger and stronger, with boffins concluding an unconscious mental mechanism recognises a threat and makes us think it is worse. On average, participants judged pistol-packers to be 17 percent taller and stronger than those judged to be the smallest and weakest men. "There's nothing about the knowledge that gun powder makes lead bullets fly through the air at damage-causing speeds that should make you think that a gun-bearer is bigger or stronger, yet you do," said Daniel Fessler.
http://newslite.tv/2012/04/16/men-look-17-percent-taller-whe.html Study: http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/carrying-a-gun-makes-a-man-appear-231577.aspx
This just doesn't apply to guns, but all weapons in general. [editline]16th April 2012[/editline] would my penis look bigger if i strapped a gun to it?
I wonder if the same test holds true for any weapon, or if it is just guns. Fuck, ninja'd

Hold it gangsta style to show them you mean business.

I'd be interested in a similar study conducted, but with musical instruments. Specifically the electric guitar. Because we're all subconsciously aware of how rock stars look fucking cool, it'd just be cool to see it represented by data. I think we were all aware that people with weapons are intimidating.
of course it fucking does... have you ever seen a person not getting scared when being pointed at with a gun?
Your obviously compensating for something if you have a large gun. Stick wig the small guns.
of course it fucking does... have you ever seen a person not getting scared when being pointed at with a gun?
I think this is just any person holding a gun in any manner of the means and not just pointed at you.

Take pitbull for example. He's actually a very average looking guy, not really talented, but made himself rich and convinced girls he is sexy by selling the image that he is a playboy who travels the world in fancy cars, private jets and has supermodels hanging off him 24/7.
Is it weird that I honestly expected to be seeing an Onion article or video?
It's not who's holding the gun.. It's how they're holding it.

A person with an instrument in a pic might be rated more attractive than one without.
I do not know if this has been posted already; albeit the fact that a man carrying a gun which can easily take down any threat posed to us in this world, obviously makes him a better mate, i.e. a man who can defend a person from injury is obviously percieved as more attractive due to the fact that the person in question is less posed to become injured while with the person carrying, for example, a weapon, than someone without one. If that makes any sense.

Wow, this is crap. Let's look at the objects used: Problem 1) The weapon in each test was either the heaviest object in its selection or something a person could easily perceive as heaviest without having held one before. Perceived weight was never considered a possible factor. Problem 2) The weapon in each test was the densest object in its selection. Perceived density was never considered a possible factor. Problem 3) The weapon in each test was the most visibly metallic object in its selection, and use of plastic and wood in non-weapon objects is sporadic. Perceived object composition was never considered a possible factor. What's more, it is concluded the results "are not explicable in terms of cultural schemas linking bodily properties to the objects at issue", yet they ignored the fact that very few heavy or lethal objects have pistol-like grips other than pistols, neglecting to repeat the firearm test with something like a hammer or equivalent dense metal object using a different grip. Similarly, regarding knives, they asked a simple question of association with men or women, ignoring the fact that context defines perception of an object, and if one is willing to look at how men with kitchen knives are portrayed by the media, one finds plenty of examples of potential cultural links between bodily properties and the object when held by men (see: their use in the "crazed killer" stereotype ala Psycho and frequent usage in IRL violent crime). Too many variables, results can be easily explained as related to simple perception of object weight/density/material composition, if not cultural factors. Somebody stop letting the anthropologists pretend they understand science.
