DONETSK, Ukraine — Intense fighting continued Thursday in eastern Ukraine, a day after separatists fighting the Kiev government claimed responsibility for shooting down two warplanes near where a passenger airliner crashed last week after being struck by a missile. Artillery explosions could be heard around Donetsk on Thursday, and the most intense fighting appeared to be coming from a contested area near the city’s airport. Despite the clashes, Australia’s leader said Thursday that he was readying a policing team of 50 officers who he hopes will join an eventual United Nations mission to secure the airliner’s crash site, which is 40 about miles east of Donetsk. The attack on the warplanes came just six days after the Malaysia Airlines disaster, which has drawn international outrage and showcased the advanced firepower that apparently is available on the ground in the region. The Ukrainian military said Wednesday that the two Sukhoi Su-25 strike aircraft were flying at nearly 17,000 feet — an altitude that is out of the reach of the shoulder-fired missiles that the rebels said they had used to down the jets. Neither the government’s nor the rebels’ claims could be verified. Ukraine has accused Russia of supplying fresh firepower to rebels over the porous border between the two countries in recent days, even as international attention has focused on a possible Russian role in the attack on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Although the details of Wednesday’s incident remained unclear, it was a sign that the rebels may still be able to inflict significant damage on the Ukrainian military, whose major advantage over its rivals is in the air.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/intense-battles-continue-in-eastern-ukraineaustralia-to-send-police-to-guard-crash-site/2014/07/24/2c6bc1c0-1315-11e4-8936-26932bcfd6ed_story.html
Ballsy, but good
Finally someone does something
Suddenly, millions of deadly spiders spotted in Donetsk
Send over a few spiders and nobody's going near that wreckage!
Out of interest, why is Australia specifically sending an investigation team? I assume there are others but why is Australia beating the drum?
Out of interest, why is Australia specifically sending an investigation team? I assume there are others but why is Australia beating the drum?
there is a fuss about aussies being killed.
What would happen if the rebels caused any trouble for these guys maybe as far as killing them? More angry letters?
Australia would probably start sending soldiers or weapons over there.
Police to guard the crash site. Considering the crash site is already being guarded by Rebel militias with automatic, probably numbering over 100 in that area. Just how well equipped are these police and defending against what? Wouldn't it be better to send some kind of investigation team, perhaps with a small contingent of body guards.
A country on the other side of the planet sends forces there. The EU that's just right next door sits around pissing it's pants. Cool
Out of interest, why is Australia specifically sending an investigation team? Current Government hasn't been going too well and is losing support so the only thing to make them look very good in this situation is to act on this event with sending our own police team to investigate. Besides these guys have balls and if you know anything about them, they won't stand down to a few rebels pointing ak's at their foreheads
Out of interest, why is Australia specifically sending an investigation team? Because bodies are already being tampered with at the crash site, we need to act fast otherwise we can't even bury the victims with dignity.
Wouldn't it be better to send some kind of investigation team, perhaps with a small contingent of body guards.
The OCSE did and got told to fuck off by the rebels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNXf_HncM20 Vice news Dispatch 61

Article's pretty long and the mention of police isn't a big focus in it. Seems these guys will chill in London until the UN agree to send a team and these officers will be attached to that.
What would happen if the rebels caused any trouble for these guys maybe as far as killing them? More angry letters?
As if If there's still any use the rebels have for the wreckage, they will say "no" and then you'll only end up with some Australians sitting a few hundred meters away from the crash site for a few days Though it's been so long I doubt that there's anything incriminating that hasn't been taken or moved
What would happen if the rebels caused any trouble for these guys maybe as far as killing them? More angry letters?
As much as Australia clings to America's rear when it comes to most conflicts if Australian soldiers were killed I can guarantee the current government wouldn't take it lightly, besides it would give them an excuse to use the new jets they just purchased with the money they cut from education. Australia might not have state of the art tanks but were not exactly just a big pushover.

send them in the commodores
What a lot of people don't understand is that no first world country with a standing military is anything to trifled with. Even Australia has a strong arm when it comes to it, and has close allies with even stronger
