EDMONTON – A so-called “men’s rights” group is defending its recent poster campaign that is sparking national outrage for claiming that some women lie about being raped.
The posters were a response to the ‘Don’t be that guy” campaign that aims to educate young men on alcohol’s role in sexual assault and define consensual sex. Men’s Rights Edmonton issued a statement on its website taking responsibility for its “Don’t be that girl” campaign that was highly criticized by police, city officials and women’s groups for sending the wrong message.
“Just because you regret a one night stand doesn’t mean it wasn’t consensual,” the posters read.
“Women who drink are not responsible for their actions… especially when alcohol is involved,” another poster said.
The University of Alberta ordered the removal of the posters because they violated the school’s posting policies.
Alberta’s minister of human services, MLA Dave Hancock, denounced the campaign on Twitter, saying it was appalling, dangerous and indefensible.
However, Men’s Rights Edmonton defended the posters Thursday, saying there is nothing wrong with advocating against both rape and false rape accusations. The group believes the original campaign was hateful towards men and insinuates that all men are rapists.
“We want rapists punished for their crimes. We also want the system to punish those that make false rape claims. How more can you trivialize real victims of rape than by making a false rape claim?” the group said, adding that some studies suggest there are as many false rape reports as real rape reports.

“We’re really angry and disturbed by the posters,” said Karen Smith, executive director of the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. “People just don’t lie about that.
That's not offensive at all.. :/
According to Battered Women’s Support Services, studies involving 18- to 25-year-old men revealed that 48 per cent of the men did not consider it rape if a woman is too drunk to know what is going on.
wow...
that poster made me smile
Even more so due to the headline from yesterday about the sex tape clearing men charged with rape.

People lie about rape, but this isn't generally considered lying. Consent comes from a clear state of mind, which drunk people are not in in the slightest.
"don't be that girl"? victim blaming HQ 2013. that literally disgusts me

if you signed a contract when incredibly drunk would you be like "yeah its okay i consented to it" lol ridiculous
The posters certainly reconfirmed that trying to be nice about bringing a message doesn't work.
Why don't people let me put up my rape posters, I'm such a nice guy
'waow im so glad these posters are spreading our cause and displaying our liberation from the matriarchy!!!'
Women can lie about it, but usually the trend is the opposite: women avoiding mentioning it at all.
If these dipshits want people to take them seriously, then they first need to take themselves seriously. And by that, I mean they need to cut the crap and just do something productive with their lives.

The poster is probably talking about cases like this.
“We want rapists punished for their crimes. We also want the system to punish those that make false rape claims. Poster definitely could've been worded better and with less of an emphasis on women who are drunk specifically but calling 'RAPE' on someone just because you don't like them is pretty shit. Being drunk and being sober when 'consenting' are two different things.
oh nevermind snip
-ok then, not my fault i didn't quite get it you bunch of fucking pedants-

People seem to make these posters because there are a few isolated cases that get into the news where some woman has consensual sex with a man or group of men and then holds that over them as claims of rape before being proven a liar by video evidence. These guys have that "how many of those rape stories were lies too" fear, which is somewhat understandable.
Problem is, these are still just isolated incidences, and a majority of real rape victims already struggle to admit they've been raped as it is; while these instances of lying and using rape as the "woman card" exist, they definitely aren't even close to a large percent of all rape cases, and that's the problem that these posters run into.
Also, there is a clear difference between a man who is in a proper state of mind getting a woman drunk, or prowling bars for a very intoxicated women to take advantage of, and two drunk or tipsy people getting into bed together and having one of them regret it the next day. These guys seem to think that every rape is the latter, two consenting drunk people, when in reality there are hardly ever instances of that happening, and it's much more often someone being taken advantage of by someone who is in a much more clear, and malicious, state of mind.
These posters have an understandable message, but because the "bad thing" they claim happens, almost never really happens, they just come off as offensive and misogynistic.
Mens rights group? What is this fuckery
Scary to think some guys can't adhere to common decency and just take advantage of drunk women huh. Sounds like victim blaming
"they have a penis they don't have rights!"
I know there is a real problem with women making false rape allegations undermining real cases and jailing innocent men, but these posters don't really help raise awareness of the issue more so they just come across as contrived, I guess the only way to tackle the issue is to make proven false cases carry the same sentence as the man (or woman sometimes) would of received had he or she been convicted of rape, but this doesnt really solve the issue which would be obviously stopping it from ever happening.
here we go

welcome to sensationalist headlines
god damn i was hoping we can have a logical discussion or something but man
was i wrong

Are there a lot of cases where women lie about sexual assault compared to cases of legitimate assault?
I don't want to sound sexist, but the posters have a clear, and based on what the spokesman said, very logical message. The problem is that the wording makes it sound like they are attacking victims of "drunk individual taken advantage of by rapist," when they are really attacking people who use regret as a method of claiming rape. (in cases where they originally gave consent to a guy who was either similarly intoxicated, or wherein the man believed (in a non malicious way) that the woman wasn't intoxicated enough to slew her judgement considerably)

you think he could just be sitting here listening to sonic youth?
i mean the poster's not wrong
lying about being raped is a shitty thing to do, current events are especially evident of that
going for the drunk angle was probably a bad decision on the poster creators' part though
you think he could just be sitting here listening to sonic youth?
i don't listen to folk music
"they have a penis they don't have rights!"
That's not what I was saying, I understand there may be biases against men in a few areas but a full-on mens rights movement seems kinda redundant, this is all new to me
Their core point stands, but maybe the drunk thing was the wrong angle to go about things

Saying that people will start a massive shitstorm of a debate on Facepunch is pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy

because having a feminist/masculinist(?) anything on facepunch is the equivalent of giving monkeys laxatives so they can sling shit at light speed

no im pretty sure its implying a lot of rape stems from women regretting it after a one night stand or implying getting fucked while drunk isn't rape
adding that some studies suggest there are as many false rape reports as real rape reports.
