My current computer is about 7 years old, been upgraded twice. Once for a 256 mb video card and once for 512 mb more ram. This means it sucks balls. HUGE BALLS. I want to replace most of the inside but keep the case and fans and crap, cause thats all fine. My goal is to have a PC that can play valve games (Gmod, HL2, etc.) on high. I also need to be able to record videos off these games and off my PS3 with no lag. Can you guys help me out?
Here's the specs of the stuff i want to replace.
Motherboard: Old piece of shit
RAM: Two piles of shit, about 1 Gb total
Video Card: 3 years old, an ATI Ratheon soemthing, got 256 mb memory
Processor: only like 1.3 Ghz
These are the ONLY things i need to replace. I got the moniter, speakers, etc. already.
Budget: 350-500 bucks
Location: Allen, TX
P.S. this is my first post, so tell if i missed anything...
Not going to happen at 350 but if you have the peripherals:

Does your case support m-ATX and/or ATX motherboards? If you don't know take a picture of the inside of your case and post it.

Switch out the following.
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150369
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171031
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103726
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277
Total: $490.27
Yeah what ghostofme said, that was a pretty hastily made list though I stand by my choice of CPU as it has the unlocked multiplier and a larger Cache. Even though that brings you thirteen dollars over budget I am positive it is well worth it. I must also note that you do not want to skimp on the PSU and the one Ghostofme proposes is less efficent (can't survive as long at huge powerloads). These are some of the things you might want to consider.
You might want to consider a 4850 for a GPU as they have dropped considerably in price and some are currently running running for cheaper than the 4770 and overall they perform better.

If OP doesn't want to go over, get the 720. If OP wants a good overclocking CPU get the 550.
With the 550 you even have a chance of unlocking two more cores making it a quad. :buddy:

4770 is nearly on par with the 4850.
Get an Athlon II X2 and a 4670.
Pretty much any AM3 785G motherboard, and 2 GB DDR3.
It will easily max any Valve game.

Yes.
I'm currently on a 240 and a 4670 with 2GBs of DDR2 667MHz.
I can max out TF2 with a minimum of 50 frames and a max of 110 at 1440 x 1050.
I don that much about computers, so coul di make videos with these specs? Im not doing anything fancy, just some easy machinimas and stuff. I need to be able to record gameplay footage.

Ok, well, i had a bet going with my dad and i won, so now i get a fairly new (3 years old) Dell Optiplex 990. It has a dual core with 3.o Ghz per core, an ATI Radeon HD somethin with 256mb, and 3 Gb ram. I've played all the Valve games on MAX on it, but could i make my machinimas? and for kicks and giggles, what would it cost to upgrade it to Fallout 3 on max everything? It has upgraded fan systems, a 1000 watt power supply, and a custom case. Its his "old computer." I have everyhting except for the upgraded processor, ram, and video card. if you need the motherboard make tell me.
