Kyrsten Sinema (Photo by Ryan Cook/RJ Cook Photography)
Arizona’s new hypercompetitive 9th Congressional District lived up its billing, with Democratic nominee Kyrsten Sinema holding a narrow lead over Republican Vernon Parker in a race that was still undecided at the end of election night. Sinema, a former legislator, led by less than 2,200 votes at the end of the night. With nearly 98 percent of precincts reporting, she led Parker, the former mayor of Paradise Valley, 47.4 percent to 46.1. Parker was down, but remained optimistic. He said he expected it to take more than a day to determine a winner. “There are a lot of votes that have not been counted and we’re going to wait and see what the final count is. We’re very enthusiastic about people who voted today and we really believe that we’re going to prevail,” Parker said. “It’s extremely doable.” Sinema could not be reached for comment. The hypercompetitive district was expected to be one of the closest races in the state. Republicans hold a small registration advantage in CD9, which covers Tempe, central Phoenix and parts of Chandler, Mesa and Scottsdale, but Democrats have a slight performance advantage in the district. Sinema raised about $1.6 million for her campaign, compared to about $800,000 for Parker. Outside groups spent about $2.4 million more, bombarding the airwaves with attack ads about how Sinema was “too extreme” to represent the district, or how Parker would undermine Medicare and Social Security. Both candidates focused on their hard-luck upbringings in their campaigns. Parker, the former mayor of Paradise Valley, grew up in a poverty stricken area in Long Beach, Calif., before attending Georgetown University and serving in the administrations of presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. Meanwhile, Sinema spoke often about growing up in poverty and briefly being homeless. The campaign took a nasty turn, as Republicans lambasted Sinema, a former Green Party activist, for a handful of inflammatory statements and actions from her past, as well as for her more recent advocacy for President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act and other Democratic policies. Democrats painted Parker as a “tea party extremist” who would gut federal spending for education and critical federal programs, and criticized him for allegations that he falsified information for a U.S. Small Business Administration program. Parker and Sinema both vied to be an Arizona congressional first. Parker would be the state’s first black member of Congress, while Sinema would be the first openly bisexual member of Congress in the country. Parker is running his second congressional race in two years. He briefly ran an exploratory committee for governor in 2009 and early 2010, but dropped out of the race to join the 10-way GOP primary in Arizona’s old 3rd Congressional District. CD9 became the focus of fierce debate during Arizona’s redistricting process. The Independent Redistricting Commission’s independent chairwoman and two Democrats wanted to draw an intensely competitive congressional seat in the Valley, ending up with a district stretching from central Phoenix through Tempe and parts of Chandler, Mesa and Scottsdale. Republicans hold a slight voter registration edge in CD9, though the district’s voters lean slightly Democratic. CD9 voters chose Obama over Republican nominee and hometown hero U.S. Sen. John McCain in 2008 and supported statewide Democratic candidates in 2010, though Arizona as a whole opted for the Republican in those races. The IRC’s Republican commissioners, however, accused their colleagues of gerrymandering the district for Democratic gain. Aside from the Voting Rights Act-protected district represented for the past two decades by Congressman Ed Pastor, CD9 is the first Phoenix-area district in generations where Democrats have been able to compete. Two of the three Democrats in the CD9 primary, including Sinema, actually moved in from outside of the district. Parker lives in Paradise Valley, outside the boundaries of CD9. Republican Congressman Ben Quayle was actually drawn into CD9, but chose instead to run in the 6th Congressional District, which began just a couple blocks away from his house. Quayle lost the CD6 primary to fellow GOP incumbent David Schweikert. ============================================================ Source: http://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2012/11/07/kyrsten-sinema-takes-slim-lead-in-cd9/
Arizona's 9th District.
well good it's not an old heteronormative white dude i guess if FP wants to have sex with her it's a bonus????
After checking up on her political actions, I can safely say I'd vote for her if given the chance. [sp]Both with my brain AND my dick[/sp]
Good for her, now where does she stand on anything actually significant? Sorry but I'm more concerned what policies representatives favor than what gender they're attracted to.
Good for her, now where does she stand on anything actually significant? Sorry but I'm more concerned what policies representatives favor than what gender they're attracted to.
well she's easily a 7/10

Now someone grab nudes of her. :v:
Glad she won, I'll miss the commercials against her though, they were pretty funny.
well she's easily a 7/10
rating women on a numerical scale sounds like something any normal person would do, right??
this is exactly the kind of evil mittens was tryin to stop communist obango ruinin our country
Why should any of that matter at all? Why should her personal life choices be an important factor in her ability to carry out politics?
because she is in a country which is stuck in the 19th century when it comes to these things
because she is in a country which is stuck in the 19th century when it comes to these things
Oh my fucking god your new avatar is awesome :O Anyways. I was just joking with the above post. I dont know who she is but i hope she's gonna do some good shit.
rating women on a numerical scale sounds like something any normal person would do, right??
Pretty sure it's a goofy thing people do to rate how hot others are, not really about women nor men. God knows if this guy was even that serious, seems like a stupid joke and that's that. Honestly I think the only thing that matters is how amazing it is. It's so symbolic of our changing society, an bi-sexual female who is an atheist. I doubt this would have flew years ago.
Good on Kyrsten, though what really matters is how well she can work politics; all those other facets are just extra colour.
Good on Kyrsten, though what really matters is how well she can work politics; all those other facets are just extra colour.
They're small things, but they show that we're tolerating them and accepting them and that's the important thing.
rating women on a numerical scale sounds like something any normal person would do, right??
I hate to burst your bubble, but it is a rather common thing in the US, mostly with the more crass/bro/immature crowd. Not that it's a good thing.
