A spokeswoman for President Beji Caid Essebsi made the announcement and congratulated women on gaining "the freedom to choose one's spouse". Until now, a non-Muslim man who wished to marry a Tunisian Muslim woman had to convert to Islam and submit a certificate of his conversion as proof. Tunisia, which is 99% Muslim, is viewed as one of the most progressive Arab countries in terms of women's rights. The new law comes after President Essebsi pushed for the lifting of the marriage restriction decree that was put in place in 1973.
Took them long enough.
This is the same country where a bunch of locals formed a human shield to protect tourists during a terrorist attack. Tunisia's alright in my book.

It's president also donates part of his own salary to fighting terrorism while encouraging others to do the same. Tunisia is awesome and proof democracy can work anywhere, no matter what culture.
If its so great why did it have such a shitty law until now
If its so great why did it have such a shitty law until now
Because they didn't have a democratic revolution until like 6 years ago. They probably had a lot of other important shit to deal with. I mean I'm no expert on Tunisia but with how progressive the country is I'm not even sure how strictly that law was enforced in the last few years.
Was the rule actively enforced?
