This passive robotic frame requires no energy input, and is instead powered by its own weight and a gentle slope. The BlueBiped can be adjusted to match the proportions of any user, and researchers plan to use it to assist people who find it difficult to walk and transport unwieldy sports equipment. It already holds the Guinness world record for the longest distance walked by a bi-pedal robot, plodding 15 kilometers (9.32 miles) in a single 13-hour stroll. Those fearing the impending Robopocalypse can at least breathe a sigh of relief that -- like some other homocidal robots -- stairs still remain out of bounds.
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/25/bluebiped-robot-needs-no-power-to-walk-for-miles-as-long-as-it/
Not that useful on its own, but you can use the design to save a lot of energy.
looks cool I want one
I bet you can get a generator on those legs and make some energy, for the motors when it needs to walk up a hill or such.
That's real neat-o. :0
i've seen prototypes of these in real life before, it's really amazing engineering
Robots these days.... When I was young they travelled to work and back, uphill both ways.
Walking is just carefully controlled falling.
There's something very mezmerizing about the way it walks. Either I've fallen in love or I've been up longer than I should have.
Wait, if it has 4 legs how is it a bi-pedal robot?
Reminds me of this:
I'd assume that since the two inside legs are joined together, and the outer two are joined, it makes two "feet" or makes it bi-pedal.
Walking is just carefully controlled falling.
look out ladies, this guy is deep
Wait, if it has 4 legs how is it a bi-pedal robot?
The two 'legs' aren't independent of each-other, so they count as one leg.
look out ladies, this guy is deep
It's basically what this machine demonstrates. Although I suppose, in retrospect, it only applies to downhill (or possibly level plane, using your upper body weight) walking.
Heh, liking the Dutch reference with the country being mostly flat and all. Lived there for nine years.
I bet you can get a generator on those legs and make some energy, for the motors when it needs to walk up a hill or such.
rethink the energy equation on this one.
I'm not even going to lie, I could have sworn that thing's legs were nine-iron golf clubs. Still, it's impressive technology. Hopefully the old people of tomorrow will be able to rely on the...whatever they're calling it.
I'm not even going to lie, I could have sworn that thing's legs were nine-iron golf clubs.
They very well could have been an inspiration, it's quite common for wonders to be inspired by the mundane.
Increase speed by 50%!
essentially this is the next level of the walkers that people with leg problems use, if a problem persists with making it move on flatground maybe they can make it so on flat ground people can use they're own body weight efficiently to make it move.
Well shit, Limburg. It was nice knowing you, with your hills and all.
Walking is just carefully controlled falling.
Why do I get the feeling this is one of those silly things George Carlin might've said?
look out ladies, this guy is deep
nah hes right, all your doing while walking is falling forwards and stopping the fall with your foot, or at least thats true for running
At least it says that homicidal robots still can't use stairs. Just warning you about stairs when the uhh... inevitable happens.

Ha. They look like little golf clubs.
WOW! Its completely pointless. It cant turn, cant handle heavy objects, and has to be on a gentile slope. It actually seems that they are wasting energy, having that treadmill on for so long. The only thing that would be useful is if you used friction to charge a battery. But the robot still walks in a straight line and you would have to use energy - Therefore, pointless.
Baby steps sir, baby steps.
Was that supposed to be a pun? :quagmire:
Walking is just carefully controlled falling.
You're an idiot if you actually believe that.
