A terrified burglar in New Zealand called police after he bumped into a hanged body while prowling around a darkened house.
The burglar's screams awoke neighbours as he fled the property he had broken into, just after midnight in the North Island city of Hamilton.
He ran home and telephoned police to report the grisly find and turn himself in.
Hamilton-based Senior Sergeant Freda Grace said:"He got a heck of fright, that's for sure.
"It would have been terrible for anyone."
Officers who were trying to contact the man's relatives confirmed that his death was not considered suspicious, and said the case would be handed over to the coroner.

Sgt Grace said that in the circumstances it is unlikely the 21-year-old burglar will be charged, but he would be given a stern warning.
Inspector Greg Nicholls, the area commander, said officers were investigating the "most unusual" case, which was unlike anything he had encountered in 28 years in the police force.
"I'm hopeful that this may be a career-changing moment for that burglar," he told the New Zealand Herald.
"I dare say for the burglar, if we remove the criminality of what he was doing, it would be really shocking.
"Can you imagine what that would be like in the dark?" Another police source said the burglar might have decided to turn himself in because he feared he would become implicated in a more serious criminal investigation when the body was eventually discovered.
Looks like he didn't want to stick around to rob the place, or anyone ever again.
Holy shit that's pretty frightening.

I'd never want to go anywhere near an empty house if something like this happened to me
I lol'd at the title
Thought it was gonna be about the burglar bumping into the home owner watching a movie or something.
What a brilliant anti burglary method.

Sort of a one shot deal though really.
So. Is it right to charge the burglar? The article said it was unlikely to occur.
Absolutely, the suicide had nothing to do with his crime
He's still breaking and entering with the intent of burglary
Depends if he robbed anyone previously, because if not then charging him only serves to deter, and I think he's already been heavily deterred from repeating.

They said they let him off with a stern warning according to the article.

Haha wow, I would've shit my pants.
just buy a couple dummys and hang them up at night. it'd be creepy when you went for a late night snack, but it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
When i saw the title i thought that the owner would be sitting around watching television

I almost got it, I thought that he bumped into the homeowner autoerotically asphyxiating himself while watching another kind of movie, then going home and posting something like 'that shit wack' on facebook
I got it from the 'hanging around' part alone, not sure where you guys are getting the movies, and other stuff from.
Why don't you just inform the police from pay phone?

Probably didn't care about getting caught or was too scared to think straight.

Or you can hang a convincing looking doll while you're going on vacation or whatever.

Although it needs the smell of decay to be convincing.

Just go buy some Durian Fruit. That will convince pretty much any non-South Asian robber it's decaying.
brb hanging skeletons around my house to ward off spirits/burglars
Or fill your house with mannequins, even if they don't mistake them for people they're going to think whoever lives in the place is mental.

Eh, to be fair, I think the poor guy's had enough punishment as it is having to find a dead body. A traumatic experience like that is gonna be far more effective as a form of negative reinforcement than a fine or a small amount of jail time is.

Definitely seems like a "FUCK IT. I'M FUCKING DONE. NOPE. NUH UH" moment.

He isn't some 13 year old kid. I'm sure if he finds himself in desperate straits again, he'll be right back to it. If uncomfortable experiences stopped the path of criminality, there would be no recidivism rate.

Pretty sure this is a lot more than an uncomfortable experience. Most people that see hanged people like that get PTSD from it.

And? By the same logic charging him is probably gonna do just as little to dissuade him if he's ever in dire straits again. A traumatic experience is usually a lot better as negative reinforcement than punishment.
Why do you think it's so easy to create a life long fear of things like dogs or clowns in children? Traumatic experiences are often an example of one trial learning.
He ruined a perfectly good opportunity to take EVERYTHING

If he did that he would be a target of a murder investigation.
One day, he'll appreciate the police for being so nice
I'm pretty sure he turned himself in to make sure the police knew he didn't murder the man (there could have been surveillance footage of him going into the house or something, or fingerprints/DNA in the house).
On the topic of burglary itself, if I were going through someone else's house and someone caught me, I'd call the authorities on myself on the spot.
I'd rather have the police deal with me than the homeowner potentially ending my life in the name of self-defense, which would be understandable.
