• Choosing a gaming laptop

It seems that there's a new generation of laptops that just arrived this month, starting with the new Intel Ivy Bridge processors, and the Nvidia's Kepler GPUs. I have a budget of $1500, and since I'm moving away from home next year for college, I'm interested in something that can "replace" my desktop without going to the proper desktop replacement notebooks. I'm looking at a 15" monitor right now, with at least a GTX670. In my research, the most intriguing laptops I've found are the following: Sager NP9150 (Clevo P150EM) for ~$1540 with free shipping. (I'm a Canadian, but I have relatives in the USA close to me) http://www.powernotebooks.com/ 15.6” Full HD 16:9 Wide screen (1920x1080) LED-Backlit Display with Super Clear Glare Type screen Standard nVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M 256bit w/2.0GB GDDR5 Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM (2.3~3.3GHz) w/6M L3 Cache - 4 Cores - 8 Threads Standard 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3/1333 Dual Channel Memory$40.00 500GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive Standard Combo Dual Layer DVD +/-R/RW CD-R/RW Drive w/Softwares Standard Windows 7 Premium - (64-Bit installed - 64 and 32-bit CD included) Full Range 180W Auto Switching AC Adapter MSI GT60 - $1500, ~$1700 with tax, but since they have a store very close to me, I can just go pick it up. http://ncix.com/products/?sku=70410&vpn=9S7-16F311-002&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar Alternatively, I could just this website again for free shipping to the USA http://www.powernotebooks.com/ Cyberpower Xplorer X6-9600, with the following config. 1,546.00 after shipping. http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1E643P Any opinions and advice for the above (and other 15"s that I haven't found)?
You know this will be outperformed by this right?: 500$ laptop and 1000$ pc on your desk at ur college?
Get an ultrabook for classes and carrying around (maybe even chromebook) and then just buy a nice desktop with what you have left if gaming is that important to you
You know this will be outperformed by this right?: 500$ laptop and 1000$ pc on your desk at ur college?
If I could bring my normal desktop I would bring it, and I'll be looking at a cheap $500 laptop instead of a $1500 one.
You'll probably have more shit to do in college instead of play computer games imo.
You'll probably have more shit to do in college instead of play computer games imo.
Depends what college and what classes he takes. And of course his priorities.
You have your whole life to play computer games. Spend your college time studying and getting laid imho......
The problem with such powerful laptops is that they are way to unwieldy to bring to class. If you're staying at your college or wherever for more than even 6 months, it's worth it to just bring your desktop with you and pick up a small laptop that can be brought to class.
The Sager NP9150 is absolutely, 100%, the best laptop for it's price:performance ratio. The new MSI and Asus notebooks just pale in comparison to its performance. No frills, just a fucking assload of performance. Optimus is also nice. [editline]18th May 2012[/editline] jesus fuck not a single post so far talked about any recommendations... [editline]18th May 2012[/editline] Yes, notebooks have much worse performance, but a GTX 675M will easily max almost every single game for the next 2-3 years, since my GTX 460M is still capable of pulling some pretty good FPS on recent games.
Why is it that every single time someone makes a thread about a gaming laptop he's searching people start the whole herp derp desktop gets more for your money ect. If the guy is asking for a gaming laptop, Then I'm pretty sure he's not asking on advice on desktops
'Gaming' laptops are kind of dumb thing, because the performance/price ratio is clearly poor compared to what multimedia laptops or even a desktop can offer.
I agree with you here, I have my own nice desktop I built a few years ago, and it works quite well still. I also have seen some of the newer, cheaper laptops, which are obviously better pref/price wise. Now, since this is one of the few last things I can buy with my parents $$, I'm interesting in what ever is the most powerful. If weight becomes an issue, I'll grab a cheap $300 netbook or something. Indeed, the Sager does seem to be the best pref/price there I've found. I'm mostly concerned about their quality, as I've never seen anyone use a Sager before.
Sagers are very high quality, along with MSI and Asus. Those 3 companies dominate the "good" gaming laptop scene, although sagers are less known. Build quality on all gaming laptops from all 3 of those are top-notch, but I have an Asus G53Jw, and it built up a few heating issues.
Lots of people don't realise how much less power a laptop has compared to a desktop.
Common knowledge of things is so rare now days that it's surprising when someone posts something intelligent? :S Question. Would it be more useful to get a 500GB HDD+120GB SSD+GTX670, or a GTX675+750GB HDD? The price are about the same.

Also, depends entirely on the speed of the SSD if the price is the same. But in my opinion SSD is more than worth the price, as long as it's a fast model.
I'd go for the 675 and 750GB HDD All SSDs are for is cockwaving.
Pepper;36018077']I'd go for the 675 and 750GB HDD All SSDs are for is cockwaving.
I have to say I disagree very much so. My SSD has been extremely useful to me as on OS drive, and if you ever need to you can record stuff with DXTory quite well.
Pepper;36018077']I'd go for the 675 and 750GB HDD All SSDs are for is cockwaving.
How? The boot times are ludicrous.
For the SSD+HDD+GTX670 combo, I'm looking at this right now: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X6-9450_Gaming_Notebook/
I have found that Lenovo offers some pretty great laptops that perform very well in games. I just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 and it can handle anything I throw at it. I am very happy with it. http://www.lenovo.com
The SSD i used must have been shite then, it wasn't much faster than my f3

I personally trust XoticPC more than CyberpowerPC since I've heard some nasty stories about them, while I've bought two laptops from XoticPC with great support. I would also recommend getting the IC Diamond cooling compound upgrade on it, since barebone notebooks can tend to run hotter than standard ones. [editline]20th May 2012[/editline] GTX 675M is still 16% faster than a GTX 670M though.
GTX 675M is still 16% faster than a GTX 670M though.
GTX 675M = rebadged GTX580M, it's not a Kepler GPU. And of course the GTX 670M is slower, because it's a rebadged GTX 570M. Basically the manufacturer is charging a premium price for an outdated GPU.
No, the price is far lower than a GTX 580M. The price is ridiculously good. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Rebranded, yes, but much cheaper now. Before, a $1400 laptop netted you a GTX 570. Now, you can get $1400 laptop for GTX 675
