(CNN) -- Anne Smedinghoff lived inside a heavily secured compound.
But the public diplomacy officer for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul was always pushing to get out.
"We thought she was relatively safe in the embassy compound, but as it turned out, Anne really wanted to do a lot more," her father, Tom Smedinghoff, told CNN on Sunday.
"She was always finding projects and assignments that took her outside to the various provinces within and around Afghanistan, and that was what she wanted to do. That was what really drove her."
He said his daughter relished the opportunity to work directly with the Afghan people and that she volunteered to go to Kabul because she felt there was "a lot of good she could do there."
This weekend, the 25-year-old was trying to do just that -- delivering books to a school in southern Afghanistan -- when a suicide bomber smashed into her convoy Saturday. She is believed to be the first U.S. diplomat killed since the September attack in Benghazi, Libya.
A great loss for both the US and Afghanistan
What do they want, killing people who are actively trying to help Afghan people?
At this point I won't be too surprised (and too dissapointed either) if everyone just left Afghanistan and built a concrete wall all around it. Out of sight, out of mind. I guess, that's what extremists want.

That's essentially what the Taliban had when they were in control. Wasn't a physical wall, but their dominance sure kept people in their place, so to speak.

What I meant by "concrete wall" is minimizing their influence outside of their country. Drugs, weapons, mercenaries etc. So, no immigration, or very very limited.
I don't want it, of course, Afghan people don't deserve to be punished for other people's doings, but at this point it's very unclear for me whether something else can be done at all.
I quickly saw this on the news without audio. The channel immediately followed up with pictures of North Korea.
Needless to say, the connection I made caused me to panic.
can we leave Afghanistan now?

The military more or less is, but this was a diplomat. Can't just cut off diplomatic connections.
