I'd say it's worth it for this price.
You might call this a steal.
You might call this a steal.
Marking kills the joke
Already. Just shows you how badly it sold.
Do not buy this ever, ever, ever. It's a horrible game. I just finished it a few days ago. It's not even worth the time playing, and I got the game for free. Regardless of the score, the game looks good if you break it down into the individual parts but the the story is so pointless, you know almost none of the motivations of any of the characters, it's all contextual jumping and platforming, the audio is mixed badly (still), they throw in a horror level in an asylum for no good reason, it's shoehorned into the story to add some little variety. The AI is unfathomably worthless even on higher difficulties they'll run after you into a dead end and just stare at you as you are standing there 2 feet away. "I GUESS IT WAS NOTHING", some areas look like they had multiple routes but in reality you only have a linear path through a section. But most importantly, it's just SO FUCKING BORING. It's like 15-20 hours long unless you do your best to only go to objectives and when you finish it it feels like nothing happened in the game. It drags out so fucking long. It's a prime example of how a AAA budget thrown at a great series doesn't mean shit.
depends how badly you dont want your $15
This also makes the other games in the Thief series 50% off, so you could pick them up instead.
Got this around when it was released and wanted to play it, but the game kept crashing every time at the loading screen after leaving your hideout, so I just lost all hope and havent touched it since.
It's not a terrible game, it's just extremely mediocre and has issues.
hah, i always knew it would be shit [editline]12th June 2014[/editline]
It's not a terrible game, it's just extremely mediocre and has issues.
oh, you're here defending it again.
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/14734/ originals are all half off and are cheaper than this new thief get them instead if you value your purchases
All the older Thief games were pretty great, even if Deadly Shadows wasn't as open or as sprawling as Dark Project/Gold or Metal Age. Kinda makes me wish Eidos Montreal didn't fuck this one up, and even though they still hold the rights I wish they sold the rights to a more competent team. Considering Ken Levine started out as a developer with Thief: The Dark Project, and considering his work on the -Shock series', do you think that Levine's new studio would be able to make a new Thief that does the older games justice? Regardless, considering the disappointment and shallow mediocrity of Thief: We Don't Need A Subtitle Because We're Triple-A, I wouldn't say no to a competent developer making a Thief-style stealth-'em-up that embraces the sprawling level design and complex-yet-intuitive stealth systems that made the originals so great. And if Levine's team is competent enough to make a game like that and do it right, with that interesting Levine-like aesthetic present in the -Shock games, all power to them.

Even for $5 it is worthless. Listen to this man. Do NOT buy this game.
Christ, you're acting like it burns out your CPU and installs a bitcoin miner on your system. Its a fine game, decent stealth elements and good puzzles. It isn't great but fuck, it didn't kill your dog.
tell that to my dead dog
tell that to my dead dog
ok
You all called me crazy when I said it was bad. Who's crazy now!
I'd say 15 dollars/euros is alright (I'm surprised it's so cheap already, that tells you a lot). GOOD: - graphics are nice - game was advertised as pick your own playstyle but it's actually smarter and easier to play stealthly - Garrett has a new actor who isn't that far from the original and he isn't some edgy bastard - the swoop ability is pretty fun to use - side quests bring back some of old Thief atmosphere BAD: - serious audio issues - contextual jumping breaks the flow of movement in a game like this - combat has major lack of animation variety - previous games have unique setting, this one seems to be afraid of it and instead gives you boring old city - the freeroam city is separated by loading screens which again completely destroys the flow and shouldn't be in a 2014 game
seriously save yourself the trouble get the originals if you're willing to drop $15 on this less than worth-it game [editline]13th June 2014[/editline] you're getting 3 better games for less than the price of 1 worse game

It's a lesson in nonlinear storytelling and using well established game mechanics to create new and unexpected emotions in the player (this is the first horror scenario in a game I have played to successfully make me afraid to turn the lights on.)
Shalebridge definitely was a cool horror level. I was pretty tense when I first played that level, and expected something horrifying when I got into the attic. Thankfully the weird jittering horrors in that place were vulnerable to flash bombs, but it still did nothing to ease the terror factor of the lights flickering when they were nearby.
There were people actually trying to defend this heaping pile of shit for whatever reason, its already getting 50% off sales. Just get Thief 1/2, infinitely superior games that are as well designed as Half Life, 1 has incredible writing and story, 2 is a good story but 10/10 level design, probably the best I have seen in any stealth game. Get 3 if you enjoyed 1/2 also, its easily the weakest of the 3 but it still does Thief a lot of justice and its well made, sadly it was held back by being on Xbox and PC and you can tell the ways the Xbox really held it back.

The place just got under my skin as if the walls themselves were a malevolent entity.
Think about it like this: The original thief trilogy is not only a buck or two cheaper in the trilogy bundle, but the playtime is probably about 40-60 hours if you played them all back to back. This DOESN'T include the thousands of fan made levels that have amassed within the past decade. The new thief will last about 8-10, less if you don't steal a goddamn thing.

The best puzzle is the one late in the game with the safe where you find a note talking about a smuggler and you figure out the code from there, that was atleast funny to me because it was so fucking obvious that it would be the one number he didn't try. It was still stupid. The other puzzles in the game weren't good, just fucking confusing because there was no information about them. Like the stairs in the underground brothel, for the most part you figure it out by running in circles and moving stairs back and forth until you make a path. The biggest puzzle is how to navigate that god damn awful city. That's half of my playtime, trying to figure out how the hell to get to my destination a mere 100 meters away. The stealth is broken. You either can hide from people in plain sight with them staring at you 2 feet away, or they will find you if you lean too much out of a corner half a mile away. I'm acting like it's such a huge deal because it's so badly written and the ending is so unbelievably disappointing it ruined my entire day. I don't want people to pay money for it.

Also, if nothing else Thief 2014 gave us a greater appreciation for the other games. That said a game in a series like this shouldn't end up being so bad it makes us appreciate the other games more out of disappointment for what we ended up with. Currently I'm playing through The Metal Age, and I think I've reached Karath-din, which was pretty cool back in The Dark Project so it'll be cool to see what'll be happening there this time around. Undoubtedly crawling with Mechanists and Droopy-bots. Seriously, I can't be the only one who thinks Karras sounds like freaking Droopy. Also also, whilst we're still talking about Thief, here are some Errant Signals by Campster, concerning the original Thief and the new Thief. It'd be interesting to see the views on his views. Half off and I'm still not buying it. Call me when it goes 90% and maybe I'll be interested. It might be a "good" game in itself, but so would F.E.A.R. 3 if I hadn't played the first two.
If you want a real Thief sequel, just download Dark mod that went standalone few months ago. It's seriously amazing and miles better than this streamlined, "modernized" garbage.
