Jamaica's new Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has said she intends to make the island a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth as the head of state. In her inaugural address, Ms Simpson Miller said the time had come for Jamaica to break with the British monarchy and have its own president. The announcement comes ahead of celebrations to mark 50 years of Jamaican independence from Britain. The Queen's grandson, Prince Harry, is due to the visit the island this year. "I love the Queen, she is a beautiful lady, and apart from being a beautiful lady she is a wise lady and a wonderful lady," Ms Simpson Miller said after swearing the oath of office. "But I think time come". "As we celebrate our achievements as an independent nation, we now need to complete the circle of independence," the prime minister added. In response, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said "the issue of the Jamaican head of state was entirely a matter for the Jamaican government and people". Ms Simpson Miller, 66, became prime minister for the second time after her People's National Party won a big election victory on 29 December. In the early 1990s, then-Prime Minister PJ Patterson also said it was time for the island to have its own head of state, and set 2007 as the deadline. Righto Chaps, Prepare the cannons.
Finally.
I hope all goes well for them and they achieve their independence. :tiphat:
Ay mon
Jamaica still has ties to Britain? I thought they were pretty much a sovereign state.
I hope all goes well for them and they achieve their independence. :tiphat:
They are independent. They just recognise the Queen as their monarch. She holds no real power over the country, as it's membership of the Commonwealth is voluntary.
Jamaica still has ties to Britain? I thought they were pretty much a sovereign state.
They were too high to notice the british colonial empire has ceased to exist decades ago
Bloody colonials.
Bloody colonials.
Looks like it's time for you to invade again.
won't this harm Jamaica more then being in the CW and seeing the Queen as their monarch?
Next step; Australia, hopefully.
Next step; Australia, hopefully.
Whats wrong with being part of the common wealth?
Good on them! I hope it goes well
Whats wrong with being part of the common wealth?
Not alot, it'd be good to show some independence though.
Not alot, it'd be good to show some independence though.
But while being part of the common wealth immigrating to other common wealth nations is a lot easier for people
Not alot, it'd be good to show some independence though.
But if you're not part of the commonwealth you will never have one of your actors impersonate James Bond :(
Probably also has trade benefits, similar to the EU, but I'm not sure
Probably also has trade benefits, similar to the EU, but I'm not sure
I don't think it does, it's more about citizenship than anything else http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_citizen
Well yeah, we've always said that, since the empire, but it must have other benefits otherwise countries that weren't even in the empire to begin with wouldn't have joined

You don't have to have the Queen as your head of state to be in the Commonwealth, though. India is also a republic, and does not recognise the Queen as their head of state, but are still part of the Commonwealth.
A little side not, but a lot of people aren't aware of this, but Canada only broke away from British dependence in '82.
They were too high to notice the british colonial empire has ceased to exist decades ago
-snip- *Sigh* people making fun of their own country to look ~cool and edgy~
Well if that's the case then nothing of value was lost, albeit the queen feeling mildly unwanted.
Maybe she'll ignore them when it comes to invites to her jubilee :v:
3 posts and a pisstake? Why do I sense a large amount of butthurt? [sp](read: biggest Empire ever)[/sp]
Who cares about the empire anymore?
I've always wondered how many people from Britain think we should have a monarchy Argree if you think we should have a King, Disagree if you think we shouldn't
Jamaicans are pretty cool people. Where I live in Massachusetts there are a lot of them, and their accents are awesome too.
They won't be in the commonwealth games anymore :'((((
