Shwaikh, who is already a trustee of the Students’ Guild, says that she has spent her life “aiming to change our society for the better and help to spread justice and fairness everywhere”, but her Twitter account tells a different story. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, she tweeted that “The shadow of the Holocaust continues to fall over us from the continuous Israeli occupation of Palestine to the election of Trump”.
Source: https://antisemitism.uk/as-university-of-exeter-brushes-off-antisemitic-incidents-we-reveal-that-malaka-shwaikh-is-about-to-be-elected-unopposed/ (has evidence and such in source, not unreliable)
So now we have her and the head of the NUS. Things are going great for students
Student drama, yay. It's literally all students do.
Student drama, yay. It's literally all students do.
What, post about Hitler and her shitty beliefs on twitter?
What, post about Hitler on twitter?
People post dumb shit all the time or cause uproar for trivial shit, there's a lot worse stuff going on in the world than someone posting a few tweets about a dead dictator.
If it was anything like my Student Union elections I'm sure it was a totally democratic and platform based election, and not just a massive popularity contest.
A anti-semitic muslim? who would have thunk it... destroying diversity to promote diversity.
But... those tweets don't look like she's anti-semitic, by any real definition. She appears to be pointing out that a lot of the same things that happened to the Jews in WWII are now happening to the Palestinians - You know, homes and businesses being destroyed, property stolen, people pushed into ghettos, to make way for Israeli settlements. Naturally that's a gross oversimplification of the situation, but her criticisms seem to be against Zionism, or the Manifest Destiny-esque belief that the land the Palestinians live on belongs to Israel by Divine right - not Judaism or Jews. If criticism of Israel's illegal expansion of settlements into Palestinian territory is antisemitism, then a hell of a lot of us are antisemitic by that definition. You can't hide behind a religion and claim oppression when people get angry that you're doing the same thing to the Palestinians that the settlers did to Native Americans, or Nazi Germany to the Jews in the early days of Hitler's reign. The difference between now and then, of course, is that the Palestinians are slightly more able to fight back, which is used as further justification for ignoring a two-state solution and continuing the settlement expansion. Bullshit source, misleading thread title. The article tries to equate her tweets with actual Neo-Nazi activity in the college by white supremacist parties. If it was any more slanted, it'd be sideways.
Wait, you guys are reading that and getting anti-semitism out of it?? Are we reading the same tweets? She is Palestinian, and although perhaps insensitive to divert attention on Holocaust Memorial day, she is simply speaking on the consequences for the Palestinian people following the end of the Holocaust. Being Anti-Zionist does not equate to being an anti semite, even though often articles seem to sensationalize it as such.
Criticizing Israel = Antisemitism now apparently.
ok, sorry about that - I used a similar title to the one on the source, should've read into it more before posting apologies
Yeah, seriously. Mods, please either close this thread or change the thread title to better reflect the reality of the situation. The article's a load of horseshit. Nothing against you personally, just it's always a good idea to give the article a look before posting; never know what the actual content may be. Boy, do you look smart now.
I expected unironic tweets about how Hitler did nothing wrong but this just seems critical of Israel.
Yeah this is definitely misleading. Not gonna ban for it but let's actually read into the context of things like this before posting it. Not antisemitism at all.
