China, Japan heading towards war, says US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta
CHINA and other Asian countries could end up at war over territorial disputes if governments keep up their "provocative behaviour", US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has said.
Speaking to reporters before arriving in Tokyo on a trip to Asia, Mr Panetta appealed for restraint amid mounting tensions over territorial rights in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
"I am concerned that when these countries engage in provocations of one kind or another over these various islands, that it raises the possibility that a misjudgment on one side or the other could result in violence, and could result in conflict," Mr Panetta said, when asked about a clash between Japan and China.
"And that conflict would then have the potential of expanding."
The Pentagon chief's trip coincides with an escalating row between Asia's two largest economies over an archipelago in the East China Sea administered by Tokyo under the name Senkaku and claimed by China under the name Diaoyu.
Tensions have steadily mounted since pro-Beijing activists were arrested and deported after landing on one of the islands in August. Japanese nationalists then followed, raising their flag on the same island days later.
On Tuesday, Japan announced it had nationalised three of the islands in the chain, triggering protests in China. Tokyo already owns another and leases the fifth.
The uninhabited islands are in important sea lanes and the seabed nearby is thought to harbour valuable mineral resources.
Sometimes violent demonstrations have been held in China near diplomatic missions in the days since Tokyo's announcement, although there have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries.
Hong Kong broadcaster Cable TV showed footage of clashes on Sunday in Shenzhen between riot police and demonstrators, with some holding a banner calling for a "bloodbath" in Tokyo.
Mr Panetta is due to hold talks on Monday with his Japanese counterpart, where the dispute is expected to top the agenda, before heading to China, then New Zealand.
Territorial disputes in the South China Sea also have Washington worried, as China has refused to withdraw claims to virtually all of the strategic waterway and has been accused of bullying smaller states in the area.
The Philippines and Vietnam have alleged Beijing has used intimidation to push its claims in the South China Sea, through which about half of the world's cargo passes.
This is not good.
Well, good thing the US navy kind of has a fuck ton of logistical bases in Asia.
isnt the U.S. practically Japan's military?
That would be so unlikely. Both because the Japanese SDF is so horribly outgunned and outnumbered by the PLA and because China would never sever the vital economic ties it has with Japan over some empty rocks with a bit of oil beneath them.
China knows better than to attack one of their largest import and export partners which happens to also be a US ally. Slightly sensationalist if you ask me.
hahaha right... we've got a fuckton of U.S bases in japan.

Yeah war is not happening
Sensationalist as fuck article. Shame on whomever wrote it.

If they're attacked they'll defend themselves regardless
Also, this is late

It'd practically become the world (or at least a portion of) vs. China if they were to attack Japan.
Not surprising given all the shit that's happening in China. The anti-Japan protests aren't being stopped by the Chinese government and the root of the conflict has been an issue for decades. I hope it doesn't come to it though, as Japan would be need to be given aid.

it may not be allowed to declare war but it sure as hell can and will fight back if someone else does it first

There already is: the US
still, china ain't gonna do shit

As far as I know the Japanese air self defense force and navy self defense force is vastly superior to the chinese one. Sure they might be outgunned in terms of raw numbers, but that's about the only thing.

Under the UN charter an agressive war is forbidden for all nations, but every single nation is entitled to a defensive war for as long as hostilities last. What Japan is doing, is creating a situation where they might be forced to "defend" themselves. It's also the reason they don't maintain and army but a self defense force.

They don't even have a military. They have a state sponsored, extremely advanced, militia.

China's main multirole fighter was sold to them by Israel. Fucking hilariously ironic to me. Have fun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-10

Actually their SDF is essentially an arm of the police force. But is relatively compearable to modern militaries.
I mean their "airforce" has some 400 modern fighter aircraft.

Claimed that some of their technology was sold.
i like both china and japan :( can't we all just get along i mean north korea is right there waiting for them
Is this month the month of international conflicts, or is that just me?
War's only going to happen if the Chinese government just up and leaves the country to the street trash
So basically never
I have no idea what that means.
the governments not going to do it
the only people who would advocate going to war are angry Chinese protestors.
I think thats what he's saying
Is this month the month of international conflicts, or is that just me?
There is always international conflict.
The media just picks what it wants to air it or not.
hahaha right... we've got a fuckton of U.S bases in japan.
Yeah I grew up on one.
Whoever wrote this article is a moron. War between China and Japan means war between China and the US as a result of the treaty Japan signed ending WW2. AKA impossible
The Archaic WW2 laws we put on the Japan need to be erased though.

I think it's quite fine for a country outlawing the ability to declare war and leave war only in the ability to defend the homeland.

To be honest this actually applies to every nation that has ratified the UN charter. Considering ratified international treaties are generally considered to be on a supralegal (but subconstitutional) level an aggressive war is generally legally banned for a huge load of nations.
