Nevada Prison To Charge Prisoners For Food and Healthcare
A prison in Nevada County will charge inmates for food and medical care, despite fierce opposition from human rights group who argue it amounts to a cruel and unusual punishment. On Wednesday, The Elko County Commission approved Sheriff Jim Pitts' proposal to charge inmates at the Elko County jail $6 (£3.55) a day for meals, $10 (£6) for each doctor visit and $5 (£3) for initial booking into the jail.
Good idea, Why should the taxpayer pay for their mistakes.

Put them in debt so they have a reason to return
Good idea, Why should the taxpayer pay for their mistakes.
Because if we don't pay for prisons and shit, then they won't be in them. Is that what you want?
Anyway, this is terrible. I hope this doesn't catch fire and all the sudden you have to pay rent for the place they forcibly put you in or some shit.

because society caused them to make their mistakes. that's what crime is.

Because everyone deserves a second chance.
what're they gonna do if someone can't afford it? kick them out? :v:
certainly not stop them
from commiting future crimes
They should also make children who are under the care of the state pay for their social workers, food and housing. No more free lunches.
Prisons should be costly for the state, to discourage them from needlessly imprisoning people.
But... why would prisoners have money?
Good idea, Why should the taxpayer pay for their mistakes.
Yeah, lets charge them for rent and utilities while we are at it!
this is disgusting
I thought California already makes its prisoners pay for their incarceration.
BTW, Ohio's already been caught running debtors' prisons illegally.
History literally repeats itself, as soon as the population gets too lazy and comfortable and forgets what their grandparents' generation fought and died for.

Do serial killers, rapists and child molesters deserve a second chance?

If they use it correctly, I don't see why not

Food and health care should be considered a human right, not a privilege.

Being costly also can have the effect of making them not imprison criminals
I don't see why everyone is rating me dumb. They don't force ANYONE to pay for being in prison unless that person DECIDES to become a criminal.

Imprisonment should be discouraged. Honestly, if we are jailing enough people to the point where we can't afford to care for the inmates, there is something seriously wrong.
Do serial killers, rapists and child molesters deserve a second chance?
emotion has no place in the law, or determining people's fates. I don't care if a person raped 34895734 people and killed 12 billion more, he deserves a fair trial and possible second chance.

Ill make sure to never decide to do that sounds like a bad career choice.
Prison populations finally got so high the easiest course of action was just starving them to death to make more room.
I don't see why everyone is rating me dumb. They don't force ANYONE to pay for being in prison unless that person DECIDES to become a criminal.
People are forced into crime every fucking day. Some people commit crimes and legitimately need help. Tons of people are wrongfully put into jail. What the state decides is right or wrong for society is not objectively right, and pretending that all criminals are inherently bad people and all deserve bad treatment is willful ignorance to the extreme.

yeah but if you're in debt when you leave then how are you supposed to get the money to stay out of prison for good? unless Nevada is some kind of pure meritocratic utopia, this is going to force ex-cons back into crime to pay their debts and make up for the money that they lost. basically one crime becomes a continuous fall that you can't recover from unless you were rich to begin with.
[editline]9th February[/editline]
having to pay extra money if you get caught won't change the fact that you're poor and you need a source of cash. all this is going to do is increase the recidivism rate
[editline]9th February[/editline]
also it means that rich people are going to have an easier time of prison while poor people will be forced into a long downward spiral, so you're also looking at widening the gap between the classes as well as all this completely unethical bullshit
Wow he hit a nerve, eh?
Yes, he did.
If you don't have enough money to pay for prison you should have worked a little harder in school huh.
Pull yourself up by your bootstraps you bum.

You don't see the obvious problems of those with little money and little job opportunity being forced into crime, then into jail, then they become even further indebted, come out of jail, and have fewer job opportunities?
I think you may need to rethink your entire view.
