• Youth curfew laws in the united states

Can anybody explain to me how exactly all these youth curfew laws were passed without teenagers actively resisting the denigration of their civil liberties? It's new years eve, and since I'd been staying up late I figured I'd go grab a bite to eat down the street. I wasn't arrested or anything, but before leaving I decided to check if there was a curfew enacted for teenagers. It turns out in the state of florida, along with just about every state in the country, legislation has been created that allows counties to enact curfews that restrict the movement of minors. In my state, there's a single widespread curfew that encompasses all of the counties; let's take a look- The law basically says that if I'm walking back from a late night movie to my house, a police officer gets a free pass to detain me. Florida also has stop and identity laws which require you to identify yourself to a police officer at night. Those two laws paired up together basically gives my civil rights the middle finger. The thing that upsets me about curfew laws is that there's no statistical evidence that show youth curfews work as crime deterrents. The curfews turn good, law-abiding kids into criminals, all while trampling on their civil liberties. It allows the police to arrest minors who are participating in constitutionally protected activities, and it infringes on a parent's right to decide what his or her child's curfew is. I'm trying to ask myself why nobody has stood up to these laws, and tried to make a case against them. Where were the the teenagers, the adults of today, when these laws were passed? I guess my closing statement a simple question; how do I actively challenge these unconstitutional curfews imposed on young adults like myself? and happy new year.
Stop going out so late.
First of all, do you honestly think that us teenagers obey these laws? Second, what year was this "law" established? And third, take a look at our society, you have teenagers everywhere at night. Movie theaters, restaurants, diners, shopping centers, etc. You honestly think cops care? Hell, I was out at 2 am once riding my bike on one of the busiest intersections, I didn't get stopped or anything. By the way, minor by definition in Florida for curfew is under the age of 16.
cause 90% of teenagers don't pay attention to politics or legislation. I've known countless times where when i talk politics the person turns dumb on me
It's just another way the man is trying to keep us kids down. Oh wait...I'm 20.
Instead of fighting it why don't you shut up and obey your laws It's more likely so you don't get raped at 3 in the morning
Stop going out so late.
Although I rarely go out late at night, I'd still like to reserve the right to do so. Biased opinions are what resulted in these curfews being enacted. Secondly, I'm unable to find the year that the Florida curfew was enacted. Lastly, movie theaters, restaurants, diners, and shopping centers are all private entities, that means that curfews do not apply to them.
When you turn 18 you'll see how silly this thread is.
just don't get pulled over and you'll be fine

Not here they don't, we don't have any of that stuff :v: Well we have a couple restaurants, but they're closed by 11 anyway.
Go to bed, whippersnappers!
Also, the cops here do care, actually. If you look underage, they will stop you, ask your age, who you are, where you're going, etc. If you're underage, they'll just tell you to go home (at least that was my experience).

And it sucks to be you if you don't have any of that stuff where you live. I assume you don't live in Florida in that case.
I'm pretty sure that is a local statute, and not a statewide regulation.
When you turn 18 you'll see how silly this thread is.
Except when I'm in college probably taking some class on political sciences.
just don't get pulled over and you'll be fine
The driving curfew which I find to be incredibly ridiculous is different from this curfew. This one deals with minors being forced to stay inside their homes at night. I've broken it too many times, the cops in my town just stopped caring.
When you turn 18 you'll see how silly this thread is.
Curfew only applies for those under the age of 16.
That, and they're too busy busting the drunken college kids.
What could you possibly do that's not destructive at that hour? The law isn't hurting you so deal with it.
Snip
And it sucks to be you if you don't have any of that stuff where you live. I assume you don't live in Florida in that case.
Well, the nearest city is 20 miles away from me.
What could you possibly do that's not destructive at that hour? The law isn't hurting you so deal with it.
I'm going to assume that you're kidding by saying the law isn't hurting me, and that I should just 'get over' a law that treads on one of my nearest and dearest rights for the next two years.
Curfew only applies for those under the age of 16.
Not here. It applies to everyone under 18.
What could you possibly do that's not destructive at that hour? The law isn't hurting you so deal with it.
Going to the store for drinks/food, going back to a friends house or something; teenager stuff.
What could you possibly do that's not destructive at that hour? The law isn't hurting you so deal with it.
I do shit all the time at my friends in town when it's late. We'd be out almost all night if we could, and we're not harming anyone, or being very loud. Just because you're under 16 or 18 and out past 11 PM doesn't mean you're walking around looking to fuck shit up.
What could you possibly do that's not destructive at that hour? The law isn't hurting you so deal with it.
oh okay
Who the fuck cares? Go out anyway, most cops wouldn't arrest you, just be all like "watch out mate, it's gettin' late," at least that would be the case in Australia.
oh okay
thanks for coming
Who the fuck cares? Go out anyway, most cops wouldn't arrest you, just be all like "watch out mate, it's gettin' late," at least that would be the case in Australia.
Keywords 'in australia'
why would you want to go out that late thats when the rapists come out of their hobbit holes and roam the plains
And nowhere in Aus even has a curfew! What's the police/nanny state now? [editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
thanks for coming Keywords 'in australia'
Meaning that's the only place that I know for sure, but I definitely know that most cops wouldn't give 2 shits, as long as you aren't being destructive.
