A pair of Maine teenagers face animal cruelty charges after they tossed an 8-week-old kitten in a microwave oven and turned it on, police said.
South Portland police tracked down the two 15-year-old girls on Monday, after a video of the heartless act surfaced on Twitter last week, authorities said.

Justice is served
And cat is alive and safe.
What!?
Seriously why do people do these things?
In the video you really can't tell if they turn it on or not. So hopefully that's the case.
But if it isn't, what the fuck drives people to do shit like this.
"Oh look, a small animal that trusts me, let's throw it in a microwave" I mean do people actually think like this?
fuck yeah

Vine drove a lot of people to do stupid shit

It's not Vine's fault, i hate when people blame the platform. Clearly the issue is with the girls morals and probably how they were parented.
Who the hell puts a kitten in the microwave?
Why the fuck would you do that.....For views?
Sick people.
Vine has videos of like 7 seconds. Even if the video had been nothing but the cat in the oven, with it on, it wouldn't have harmed the thing.
This is fucking stupid, but it isn't cruelty.
Something like this was going to draw a lot of attention anyway due to possible hints of harm and cruelty whiffing off the scent of the idea.
It's just bad anyway you look at it.
I would say the vine is fake entirely/trolling, there's a jump-cut between her shutting the door and turning it on. It obviously gets turned on but you can't tell if the cat is still in it.
I'm betting that they recorded the girl putting it in, then swapped the clips of her letting it out and then turning on the microwave to make it look like the cat was still inside.

I also recommend Plinkett's 'Eating Pussy: A culinary guide to preparing feline meat'. 5 stars.
Have people started hunting her down yet? I remember the uproar over the old woman putting a Cat in a Wheelie Bin.

Ok let me put you in an oven and turn it on for a few seconds, I'm sure you wouldn't mind at all, right?

If the cat isn't hurt, it wasn't cruelty. These two are morons, they should have included a disclaimer or something, but the fact of the matter is that it wasn't hurt.

And no, I wouldn't mind if it didn't harm me.

Okay I'll just use a taser on you a couple times. It won't harm you, so you wouldn't mind right?

Cruelty (noun) - callous indifference to or pleasure in causing pain and suffering
They're indifferent to how the animal feels, whether it was actually harmed or not.
It IS cruelty. Don't try to be that guy.

Ok then - why don't you go stick your hand in a microwave and turn it on for a few seconds?

Are you aware of how a microwave over works? The microwaves boil the water inside the food (or kitten), resulting in a nice thorough cooking.
I don't pretend to be an expert, but I get the feeling that it would take more than 10 seconds for it to cause any kind of discomfort to the thing, and that's assuming it was actually put in the oven and had it turned on.

A taser hurts. I doubt that the kitten felt anything beyond confusion at the spinning plate and the slowly rising temperature.
Just looking at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071230230254AApJnjy tells me that it wouldn't have been in there long enough for ANYTHING to happen.

The number one reason for me not doing that is that I would be forced to remove the hand.
As cats are familiar and easily kept animals, their physiology has been particularly well studied; it generally resembles that of other carnivorous mammals but displays several unusual features probably attributable to cats' descent from desert-dwelling species.[35] For instance, cats are able to tolerate quite high temperatures: Humans generally start to feel uncomfortable when their skin temperature passes about 38 °C (100 °F), but cats show no discomfort until their skin reaches around 52 °C (126 °F),[54]:46 and can tolerate temperatures of up to 56 °C (133 °F) if they have access to water.[63]
skin, a microwave works very differently from an oven, basicaly you'll end up with a bunch of localized boiling which could do internal tissue damage

They can tolerate temperatures of up to 56 degrees C. Okay. Given that it was not harmed, what makes you think it reached that temperature?
Besides;
Watch that video. That is the least convincing thing I've ever seen, there's three jumpcuts, all at important moments. Just after the cat is put in, before the thing is turned on, and before she opens it.
I don't believe that it was actually microwaved, because it's fine. If it was microwaved, then they both deserve a massive kick in the arse, but it isn't cruelty, because it wasn't hurt.

Yes, skin. Seeing as how a microwave boils you from the inside out you can see how it would do more damage than if the heat was applied to the skin no? An increase in internal temperature (fever) of about 5 C's can be lethal in humans, cats can take this a bit better but it's ridiculous to suggest you only do damage when you start boiling the insides. NialR suggested this by linking: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071230230254AApJnjy

My point was that if it takes 60 seconds to boil water in a cup using a microwave, how why would a kitten experience pain after being in there for about 7 seconds?

Implying that it's not cruelty if the cat wasn't hurt may be the stupidest thing that I've ever heard anyone say ever.
My point was that if it takes 60 seconds to boil water in a cup using a microwave, how why would a kitten experience pain after being in there for about 7 seconds?
Because the temperature only has to go up a couple degrees to be uncomfortable and only a couple more to be potentially lethal. Living things generally don't take internal temperature changes very well.
My point was that if it takes 60 seconds to boil water in a cup using a microwave, how why would a kitten experience pain after being in there for about 7 seconds?
I don't see what logic you're using here. The boiling temperature of water is very high, so of course it would take a long time to boil water no matter what, it takes a hell of a lot longer than 60 seconds to boil water in a pan on the stove, and you'd be pissed if someone turned on their stove and started cooking their cat on that, wouldn't you?
My point was that if it takes 60 seconds to boil water in a cup using a microwave, how why would a kitten experience pain after being in there for about 7 seconds?
Because cats are the same density as water in a cup... right? And the blood in their veins can cool down on the surrounding cold wat--- oh wait.
The heat would be saturated on the cat's bloodstream as the best heat-conductive material in a cat. That shit would be horrible, and would cause severe damage to its veins within a very short period of time

If you put a cat on a stove and turned the stove on, there'd be burns on the cat!
There's literally nothing to suggest that the cat was actually microwaved. This is like looking at a scene in a film where someone kicks the dog and calling for the actor to be arrested.
