I'm completely new to the whole "Tablet" scene, so I don't really know anything about whats currently on the marketplace and whats coming in the future. What are considered the best tablets out? When will there be refreshes coming out? I'm not huge on reading books, but more leaned towards the apps.
Thanks!
edit: I should probably mention i've been looking at the Blackberry Playbook. I enjoy the smaller size and the seemingly fast OS interface. Any opinions on this?
Lots of android tablets, take a look at the Samsung and Asus ones.
Take a look at the HP touchpad as well.
Asus Transformer is absolutely brilliant.
I wouldn't really consider the iPad as its far to limited and provides very little interconnectivitiy with peripherals.
the ipad is designed for the people who just want to fuck around and look at pictures of cats. since you're looking into other tablets it probably isn't for you
The playbook sucks. The OS is a bad ripoff of webOS and the third party app support is minimal at best.
If you want something that will be good for typing I would wait for the launch of the Transformer Prime in December. It's a massively improved Asus transformer.
If you want something smaller sized you should look at the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, or the Galaxy Tab 8.9.
If you want to play angry birds and fruit ninja on a large screen and spend all your time on Facebook and Twitter then the iPad 2 is a good choice.
Does anyone know when they'll release a refresh to the Blackberry Playbook? Does $200 seem like a reasonable price for the 16gig model?
I highly doubt they will after Playbook flopped like that.

Why did it flop? It seems like a nice small tablet, and they're releasing the update that supports the Android marketplace soonish.
I guess everyone forgot about the HP Slate.

Full win7, runs pretty well too.

It's also $700.
So are iPads.

The Apple website has the Ipad 2 currently listed at $458. I'm looking for a smaller, cheaper one to use for the internet and some random apps.

It was just badly done, no native Email client, awful app support without the Dalvik virtual machine for Android apps. There was really no need for it, it didn't do anything special that other, better tablets did.
Asus Transformer 1 is the best android tablet out there for the money atm, especially if you want to use it as a netbook as well with the keyboard dock (which also adds 8ish hours of battery life too).
It goes for about $350 I think for just the 16GB tablet, supports microSD, etc. No 3G
Samsung Galaxy Tab is a "better" tablet, but it's also more expensive for exactly the same specs. Goes for $500 I think. It's advantages over the ASUS Transformer is better form factor, lighter and slightly skinnier, and you can get 3G models I think.
Coming out this december though is the Transformer Prime (or transformer 2), which will be by far the best tablet on the market. It's very similar to the current TF, except it runs Tegra 3 which allows for a 14 hour battery life yet also being able to run 1080p video smoothly (quad core). It will also be one of the lightest and thinnest tablets on the market when it comes out. Only comes with a 32GB model AFAIK, and that will go for about $500 I think. Still no 3G.
If you want smaller, you could try looking into the Kindle Fire ($200) and the Nook ($???). I've heard good things about both. None of them run Honeycomb though, which is the Tablet OS for Android. I think there is only 1 7" tablet on the market that doesn't just run an upscaled smartphone OS, I can't remember what it was though. Not that any of that matters when Android 4 (ICS) will come out to ALL devices within the next few months, even the current/new generation tablets.

Well you can plug in certain USB 3G modem(s) into the EEE Transformer and the EEE Transformer Prime and get 3G connectivity, but that's cumbersome.
Motorola Xoom, best tablet I have ever owned
In my opinion, iPad 2.
But for the price, go with something running Android. I still think you'd be happier with the iPad, but I recommend you look at the Transformer/Transformer Prime.
If you're after a 7 inch one check out the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus. I owned the first gen one and it was great. It's a nice form factor.
It'll be the fastest tablet out there for a while and will get upgraded to Android 4.0 Q1 next year.
I currently have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it's also quite good. Does what I need it to do and more.

I tried it in a store and I don't like how heavy it is.

I'm gonna get a Transformer Prime soon, by the way

Yeah, I think I'll get mine the day after you buy it.
I fucking love my Asus Transformer.
It's heavy, but it lasts for ages battery wise.
I'd love the Prime, but I already have the standard one, so y'know.
Oh, and it's actually pretty useful at school - the touchscreen and a note program that takes your handwriting and shrinks, along with typing it makes it really easy to write out physics stuff, and hand-draw characters that aren't available on a keyboard, or add powers and the like.
Don't consider it without the keyboard btw, I'd go for a different tablet if I didn't have the dock.

Shove in an external harddrive, but that requires the docking station plugged in, along with the external HD, so it's a bulky fix. Works nicely memorywise, though. :v:
I absolutely love my Asus Transformer.
I recommend buying the Transformer Prime.

I'll finaly have enough money for the Transformer in another 4 months ;(
Without the keyboard dock.
What are your guys' thoughts on the asus slider?
Are there any glaring real-world reasons not to get it?

I've not used one, but the transformer has twice the battery life, factoring in the dock, and the slider looks like it will be slightly heavier, and my transformer's already quite heavy.
I'd love to try one though...
The slider looks pretty fragile tbh
