Oh wow i remember being so excited for this game, especially once i got into the beta, the game was pretty fun while it lasted but eventually it became saturated with micropayments.
I'd completely forgotten about this game. I remember it being a lot of fun, a silly third person shooter was quite the major break for dice.
This makes me kind of sad to hear, actually.
Oh wow I remember this. It was pretty fun.
A fantastic little shooter that got COMPLETELY sharted on by EA and its awful pay-to-win micropayment system
I remember having so much fun with it when it was in beta
An extremely fun game that was just ruined by the p2w microtransactions
the worst part is it had the best theme, imo

i still whistle that goddamn catchy themesong from time to time.
i agree with the guys above me, the beta was a lot of fun and actually very very competitive but also great with teamwork mechanics. i ditched the game once p2w became a thing and to be honest, it's a wonder it lasted this long.
such a shame, it was so much fun
would have lasted longer if they didn't attempt to milk it with P2W mechanics.
used to play this a lot actually
It was matter of time. Microtransactions, hackers and paranoid by hackers community, who accuse good players for cheat/hack killed the game.
Even though i didn't get close beta test, its still was a fun game before p2w time.
Shame, a real shame.
Rest in Peace. June 24th 2009 - July 14th 2015
I was in one of the first betas. It was a shit ton of fun for what it was. Like a lot of people said, once the game went live with the microtransactions it just went downhill.
I was literally in the very first beta and I absolutely loved it, but my computer was shit so I could barely play it. But I still enjoyed it a lot, shame to see it go now.
I think it would be great if it was re-launched as one-off purchase for £5-10 or something(because it's quite old now) with a progression that doesn't have any microtransactions. Not gonna happen tho.

Amen, I used to play a bunch of it back in the day, maining the Soldier class with his healing burst, and I daresay I looked quite dapper back in that game.
I got my fill of fun from it back in the day, but then I lost interest around the time that they screwed up the rental system. Back when I started playing you could rent a weapon for 30 days for a tidy sum of VP, but then they scrapped that and reduced the rental time to 3 days for a smaller price, though not nearly with as much value in that proposition.
Oh well, times change, although they really should make it free if they aren't going to support it anymore, let other people host their own dedicated servers and whatnot. I mean, if they're not going to make any money off of it anymore, they might as well have some sort of post-mortem plan since games shouldn't have to die like that. After all the money they made off the playerbase, they owe them that much from a moral standpoint.
Buuut this is EA, and as they've proven time after time, morality just isn't profitable to them.
if anybody needs an example of how p2w models ruin games, Battlefield Heroes is a perfect example of it.
It was a very good game that was EA-fied into a nightmare fuckfest. Too bad.
Umm... guys... i think i just find out, that not only BFHeroes are closing.
Other F2P titles such as NFS world, BFP4F and FIFA World (excluding Star Wars Old Respublic and C&C Tiberium Alliance) are also closing in the same date.

This game had the best trailer ever.

Used to enjoy this game a lot. I can't say I've played it in a long while though and I seem to remember it started getting a bit pants because it was impossible to get anywhere without forking out for new kit.

They can't shut down NFS world
They just fixed the hacking situation and it was finally playable. I've been re playing it the last couple weeks and have fucking loved it. One of the few online racing games that were good.
Any alternatives? Drift city is pretty OK but NFS World was better..
Fifa world isn't even out of beta haha, poor people that bought fifa points with real money
Oh god, how was I let down by this game.
I waited so long to get into the beta, and once in, I found out how pay to win it would eventually become and I quit right away
Good game, I enjoyed it. What was the year it was released? 09?
can they make it a wheel game now
Instead of shutting it down, why cant they just make everything free and leave it up to the players to host it? You know, so the game isn't gone for good?
I was in the Beta, and I loved it. But when it became P2W I ditched it. Not to mention when everything was transfered to the new accounts, I lost a lot of my items, over $50 bucks in items, and all EA gave me for my trouble was $5. Only enough to buy one item that I lost.

because then EA wouldn't get any money.

EA's not getting any money by shutting it down either.

but at least no one is having fun. Can't let people have fun.
I loved this game so much, I played the hell out of it. This is really upsetting. :(
It's because of this game that I started with online games, got in fairly early in the closed beta, started talking to people on XFire, they told me Steam was great, and someone suggested Garry's Mod. I've moved on since then, but I'm not sure I would of been in the same place otherwise. It was a great game, and in the beta it was fun to play with people too. It's sad to see it go, but as other people mentioned, pay to win truely killed it for a lot of people, myself included.

True that, it should probably be the law if anything.
I mean, Dawngate was a game with such promise and, rather than hand it over when they couldn't continue it, they smothered the poor blighter in its crib like some head-sick mother who thinks that if they can't raise them, no-one should. That was a game that SHOULD have continued, it had SO MANY GOOD IDEAS that weren't in League or Dota. I mean, its main slogan was "Break the Meta", wherein you could not only choose your hero but also choose a specialized Role that determined how you would play that hero.
There was the Gladiator Role which focused on last-hitting, the Tactician Role which revolved around harassing and zoning a'la supports (as well as gaining extra gold for being near lane minions when they died), the Hunter Role which made for a good Jungler type through damage and kill-specific lifesteal, and the Predator which focused both on ganking and attacking the mineral line.
Speaking of which they also had the spirit well mechanic, wherein your team could capture these mining places that gave the team more of a passive gold gain for each of the locations you had captured, not only enabling catch-up if your team was behind on item progression but also granting the team another thing to focus on beyond laning and jungling, with Shapers in the Predator Role having a strong incentive to harass the mineral line by killing off enemy workers and reducing the gold they got from those mines.
And since the MOBA market is effectively saturated, since there is little to lure people to newer games when they can just play League or Dota or Heroes of the Storm, we're probably never going to see Dawngate's mechanics again unless Riot or Icefrog decide to take what Dawngate designed and implement it into some sort of experimental "2.0" gamemode to test the waters.

Misery is not profitable either. People cannot feed off of misery and disappointment like some sort of soul vampire, so there is no wealth, monetary or spiritual, to be found in pissing people off.
