I have an old computer, pretty damned old, and I want to know, can I run Windows 7? I can get it for super cheap from my cousin who works for Microsoft, so I want to know if my computer can run Windows 7.
My specs:
AMD Anthlon 64 3400+
NVidia 5200FX
897MB RAM
It's probably going to be a long shot, but can I run it? I don't need to turn on fancy effects, I just want it to run decently with the fancy effects off.
I'm saving up to build a better computer eventually, but I want to dual boot with Ubuntu and be able to play WoW on this computer on occasion.
Should I just use my old copy of XP, or should I try and run WoW in Wine?
That video card won't do the fancy effects but an extra couple gigs of RAM and you should be good.
Isn't there a download where you can install and checks everything from hardware wise all the way to your aps if it can handle Windows 7? Here is the download http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx
Will probably not run that great, I recommend you use your copy of XP instead.

I don't care about effects.
I'm also short on cash, but I might try to earn some money and buy this:

This good?
Also, my computer has 1GB RAM, but for some reason it says I have 897MB, this because one of the sticks is faulty, or can my motherboard not support more?
Actually if the RAM is going to cost you that much you might as well stick with what you have then get what you want when you get a new computer in the near future. I didn't realize you were using DDR, you shouldn't drop that much money into an old machine if you're going to be buying a better one.
Well, the earliest I could buy a computer is once September rolls around and I've saved money from a Summer job. My money making is too slow right now to be able to buy a computer any time soon.

I'd just wait, save now then in September get a bitchin' fast machine. If you can get a copy of Windows 7 cheap right now then go for it and put it away for the new computer when the time comes around.
Just try Wine for now.

This, don't even bother buying Windows 7 unless you are getting it nearly free.
Just build a new PC
Your video card will do all the extra effects, and at a standable rate. My old Windows 7 beta rig was this:
1.8 Ghz Pentium 4
512mb of RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200
Ran Windows 7 fine despite what you might believe, aero and all. It's multi-tasking abilities weren't too great, but it worked in a reasonable state.

I suggest you save up and buy a blasting rig with Windows 7.
For god's sake UPGRADE!
Upgrade and get 7.
use Xp in the meantime.
I've run Windows 7 on worse specs than the OP. It runs fine on 1GB ram, so you should be alright.
I believe the reason you're getting 897MB of RAM reported is that your computer is using integrated graphics.
I recommend getting an actual video card.
It will run. I have running 7 on my Laptop with Core Duo (@1.7 GHz), 1 GB Ram and Radeon 200M - All are very slow components but still worse than yours. And it works perfectly fine for me.
yeah it will run fine, i've ran Win7 on worst, belive me.

He has an actual video card - his RAM probably consists of 512+256+128.
One thing you can do is use vLite to slim Windows 7 down of it's bloat. If there are drivers and services you'le never use, rip them out and burn the slimmed-down ISO to a DVD. I made a 870MB DVD of Windows 7 Ultimate, and it left me with a very snappy installation, taking up only 5GB of HDD space and using only 230-ish MB of RAM after a cold boot.

This seems to be the best course of action.
